An animatic is a movie of the storyboards. This is used for timing our motion picture. It also helps us judge if the movie will be a success. To create an animatic, the storyboard, the film score, the dialog and the sound effects are put into an editing program to create a movie which we can show to investors. Later, when we record the voices for the animated version of this motion picture, the actors will watch the animatic to help understand the action and the timing of the dialog.
This course is an introduction to narrative film, emphasizing the unique properties of the movie house and the motion picture camera, the historical evolution of the film medium, and the intrinsic artistic qualities of individual films. The primary focus is on American cinema, but secondary attention is paid to works drawn from other great national traditions, such as France, Italy, and Japan. The syllabus includes such directors as Griffith, Keaton, Chaplin, Renoir, Ford, Hitchcock, Altman, De Sica, and Truffaut.
The main purpose of our device is to detect velocity of motions in a movie file, and it is helpful to understand the mechanism in idealized cases. It is too complicated to come up with appropriate algorithms for all possible input data at once, and we want to look at the simplest cases first. Our choice of data is a simulated movie. Reducing to bare bones, a blank, constant background (noise-free) with a single object moving across the screen is a good start.
This course examines Japanese popular culture as a way of understanding the changing character of media, capitalism, fan communities and culture. Topics include manga (comic books), hip-hop and other popular music in Japan, anime (Japanese animated films) and feature films, sports (sumo, soccer, baseball), and online communication. Emphasis will be on contemporary popular culture and theories of gender, sexuality, race, and the workings of power in global culture industries.
Students are introduced to the sound environment as an important aspect of a room or building. Several examples of acoustical engineering design for varied environments are presented. Students learn the connections between the science of sound waves and engineering design for sound environments.
