Abstract:: This course looks at medicine from a cross-cultural perspective, focusing on the human, as opposed to biological, side of things. Students learn how to analyze various kinds of medical practice as cultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on Western (bio-) medicine; students examine how biomedicine constructs disease, health, body, and mind, and how it articulates with other institutions, national and international.

Abstract:: Back in simpler times, doctors took care of their patients one visit at a time. Rarely did they feel compelled to pay much attention to the larger communities to which their patients belonged. That was left to public health professionals, if they existed. More recently, however, it's become abundantly clear that practicing high quality, cost-effective medicine requires us to look beyond our patients to see a whole population of people in need of our attention.
