Donald Burgy's 'Contexts' is a commentary on communications. 'All communications are transformed by the contexts through which they pass,' a man tells us at the onset of the work. As this man continues to deliver observations, the camera pulls back repeatedly to reveal that he is speaking from a television screen. This effect creates a seemingly infinite loop of video within video. No credit information is included, although the work is included on a tape with Burgy's 'One Many' and may have been created at the same time with the same personnel. This piece is under three minutes in length. "Artist's Showcase' was a series designed to showcase video art and experimental work from WGBH. The program ran on Sunday evenings at 11 P.M., from the fall of 1976 through 1982. In the early 1970's, 'Artist's Showcase' was the only consistent broadcast outlet for many of the Workshop productions. Most materials of broadcast quality created at WGBH in the mid-1970's were shown as part of this series. Additionally, earlier video art experiments and segments of related shows, such as 'Mixed Bag' or 'What's Happening Mr. Silver' were broadcast under these auspices. This series was also a broadcast outlet for a handful of works by video artists that were not created at WGBH but only acquired for this purpose. Some compilation reels showing highlights of Workshop activity were also broadcast.

Earl Ubell is a pioneer among science and health writers in America. After a long, distinguished career at The New York Herald Tribune from 1943 to 1966, he went on to work at both CBS and NBC News. Prominent in the emerging scientific writing community in the 1950s and early 1960s, he was a recipient of the Lasker Medical Journalism Award 1957. Milton Stanley Livingston was a leading physicist in the field of magnetic resonance accelerators. Working first with professor Ernest O. Lawrence at the University of California, Livingston was instrumental in the development of the Berkeley cyclotron. Moving to Cornell in 1938, Livingston was part of the core group who established nuclear physics as a field of study. Choosing to stay with the Cornell cyclotron rather than follow colleagues onto the Manhattan Project, Livingston was involved in the production of radioisotopes for medical purposes. At the time of this interview, Livingston was director of the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, a joint project of Harvard University and MIT.In this program segment Louis Lyons quizzes Earl Ubell about the lack of public knowledge and the perception of the nuclear bomb, while pressing Professor Livingston to explain exactly what nuclear fallout is, and the danger it presents.

Dan luister je naar de weersvoorspelling en kiest uit de multiple choice antwoorden. Daarna vul je de ontbrekende woorden in. Tenslotte kan je de juiste prent bij het juiste weersverschijnsel aanduiden.

Op het einde van deze les kun je je mening over de impact van televisie op het gezinsleven verwoorden. In een eerste oefening formuleer je op basis van een leestekst 5 voordelen van de televisie. Daarna lees je de tekst "de invloed van televisie op kinderen" en zoek de substantieven die bij een werkwoord horen. 'Way Downtown' combines animated and electronically enhanced still images with scenes of public life from an Asian culture. In the opening sequence a still image is slowly animated to show frantically ticking clocks. Images from advertising and mass media are juxtaposed against scenes of window washers and street crowds. Driving rock music, 'Guitar Trio,' by Rhys Catham accompanies the work. The piece is approximately eight minutes long and was broadcast as a segment of episode 303 (1987) of 'New Television.'
