Global Words: Junior Primary Resources

Abstract:: These units, and the supporting resources of Global Words, aim to build the essential knowledge, skills and values young people need to participate actively, critically and creatively as global citizens. This curriculum integrates the teaching and learning of English, across strands of language, literature and literacy, with Global Citizenship Education, using explicit and exploratory teaching and learning activities. The four units use a range of text and text-types to address the themes of Sustainability, Refugees and migration, Neighbours, Asia/Pacific, and Indigenous peoples, with a focus on literacy with Geography and Human Society and its Environs curricula. All units of work include an overview, description of focus, four teaching and learning activities, and links to the curriculum content, strands, outcomes and indicators.

Refugees and Migration: Words to Unite Us

Abstract:: Words to Unite Us explores the complex theme of a common humanity and shows that despite the differences between people around the world, there are similarities that unite us, such as pain, joy and love. The unit is build using the picture storybooks 'Whoever You Are', written by Mem Fox, illustrated by Leslie Staub; 'Mirror' by Jeannie Baker and 'The Little Refugee' by Anh Do and Suzanne Do and illustrated by Bruce Whatley. The stories speaks of hope, resilience, friendship, love and enterprise. Unit elements include an overview, description of focus, teaching and learning activities, and links to the Australian Curriculum. The unit explores the global citizenship topic of refugees through the Australian Curriculum: English, and strands of language and literature, applied to a range of texts and text types.

Abstract:: Students struggle with informational texts and websites. Understanding the structure of these texts is essential to efficient information gathering. The "Road Map" is a pre-reading strategy. Like the road map in your atlas, this mapping activity will help students visualize the layout of the text before they start reading so they will have an idea of where they are going (or where to find the information they are looking for) when they start reading. This lesson will also address active-reading strategies students can use to find information for research in print and electronic sources.
