Concepts of building technology and experimental methods. Projects vary yearly and have included design and test of strategies for daylighting, passive heating and cooling, and improved indoor air quality. Experimental methods focus on measurement and analysis of thermally driven and wind-driven airflows, lighting intensity and glare, heat flow and thermal storage, and load deformation of materials. Experiments are conducted at model and full scale and are often motivated by ongoing field work in developing countries.

Students explore the many different ways that engineers provide natural lighting to interior spaces. They analyze various methods of daylighting by constructing model houses from foam core board and simulating the sun with a desk lamp. Teams design a daylighting system for their model houses based on their observations and calculations of the optimal use of available sunlight to their structure.

Meteo 361 focuses on mesoscale meteorology and mesoscale forecasting.

Introduces students to the variety and scope of stagecraft while they learn basic shop skills. Students develop shop vocabulary and learn basic skills, including the safe use of all shop machines, basic handwork skills, names and uses of tools, and an overview of the various activities that go on in each shop. In each seven-week segment, students complete a project that uses all basic skills. Introduction to Stagecraft is a hands-on course that gets students working with the tools and techniques of theatrical production in a practical way. It is not a design course but one devoted to artisanship. Among the many remarkable final projects that have been proposed and presented at the end of the course have been a Renaissance hourglass blown in the MIT glass shop and set into a frame turned on our set shop lathe; a four harness loom built by a student who then wove cloth on it; a number of chain mail tunics and coifs; a wide variety of costume and furniture pieces and electrified period lighting fixtures.

Through an introduction to the design of lighting systems and the electromagnetic spectrum, students learn about the concept of daylighting as well as two types of light bulbs (lamps) often used in energy-efficient lighting design.

Combines practical instruction, readings, lectures, and group discussions intended to foster an aesthetic appreciation of photography and digital imaging, and a critical awareness of how images in our culture are produced and constructed. Practical instruction in basic black and white techniques, digital imaging, fundamentals of 35mm camera operation, studio lighting, film exposure and development, and darkroom printing. A student-initiated term project provides opportunity to develop technical and perception skills. Work is presented in a critical form throughout term. students. Subject combines practical instruction, readings, lectures, field trips, visiting artists, group discussions, and individual reviews. This is an intensive, hands-on editorial and production course in which students pitch their ideas and then research, report, produce, shoot, write, and edit their own short documentary films on social issues affecting the local community, the U.S., or the world. Readings and discussions focus on current news, media ethics, media literacy, the declining credibility of the press, journalists? responsibilities to the public, social justice issues, First Amendment principles, corporate media ownership, media images of women and people of color, and the powerful role of media (TV news, documentaries, new media, digital storytelling) as tools for civic engagement and positive social change.
