Enzymes, nature's catalysts, are remarkable biomolecules capable of extraordinary specificity and selectivity. Directed evolution has been used to produce enzymes with many unique properties, including altered substrate specificity, thermal stability, organic solvent resistance, and enantioselectivity--selectivity of one stereoisomer over another. The technique of directed evolution comprises two essential steps: mutagenesis of the gene encoding the enzyme to produce a library of variants, and selection of a particular variant based on its desirable catalytic properties. In this course we will examine what kinds of enzymes are worth evolving and the strategies used for library generation and enzyme selection. We will focus on those enzymes that are used in the synthesis of drugs and in biotechnological applications. This course is one of many Advanced Undergraduate Seminars offered by the Biology Department at MIT. These seminars are tailored for students with an interest in using primary research literature to discuss and learn about current biological research in a highly interactive setting. Many instructors of the Advanced Undergraduate Seminars are postdoctoral scientists with a strong interest in teaching.

Explores the impact of the printing press upon European politics and culture during the first several centuries after Gutenberg and compares these changes with the possibilities and problems inherent in contemporary electronic technologies of the word. Assignments include formal essays and online projects. There has been much discussion in recent years, on this campus and elsewhere, about the death of the book. Digitization and various forms of electronic media, some critics say, are rendering the printed text as obsolete as the writing quill. In this subject, we will examine the claims for and against the demise of the book, but we will also supplement these arguments with an historical perspective they lack: we will examine texts, printing technologies, and reading communities from roughly 1450 to the present. We will begin with the theoretical and historical overviews of Walter Ong and Elizabeth Eisenstein, after which we will study specific cases such as English chapbooks, Inkan knotted and dyed strings, late nineteenth-century recording devices, and newspapers online today. We will also visit a rare book library and make a poster on a hand-set printing press.

This freshman course explores the scientific publication cycle, primary vs. secondary sources, and online and in-print bibliographic databases; how to search, find, evaluate, and cite information; indexing and abstracting; using special resources (e.g. patents) and "grey literature" (e.g. technical reports and conference proceedings); conducting Web searches; and constructing literature reviews.

Learning how to learn can help you to understand what works for you - and what doesn't - when you set out to learn new skills at work, in education or training and in everyday life. In developing and assessing the key skill of improving your own learning and performance, you will learn to recognise, use and adapt your skills confidently and effectively in different situations and contexts. This unit is designed to be studied for 1 hour per week over 50 weeks.

"Not In Our Town Northern California: When Hate Happens Here" looks at five communities that are dealing with hate violence. This Educator Guide addresses events in San Francisco. An art exhibit was organized at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library in response to the vandalism of over 600 gay-oriented texts. This Guide includes discussion ideas and activities related to hate crimes.

Course provides an overview of the purposes and uses of outcome-based evaluation approaches and methods, and provides an opportunity to conduct a focused outcome evaluation of a user-focused service in a library, a nonprofit organization, an archive, a museum or other service-focused organization.
Objectives are to:

* Learn about approaches to outcome-based evaluation
* Identify and use context-centered methods for evaluating public information services
* Examine the role of evaluation in developing more effective information services
* Gain skill in identifying appropriate data collection and analysis methods
* Gain an understanding of recent developments in measurement and evaluation
* Read assigned readings and appropriate focused readings
* Plan and carry out a focused outcome-based evaluation project

Primary students will learn the basics of library organization. They will be introduced to the use of call letters.

Students will use an electronic card catalog to find books by subject using the call number. This lesson was used in collaboration with a third grade thanksgiving unit. As part of the unit students were to find a recipe to prepare and bring to class.

We constantly need to find and use information, not only in the academic world but also in the course of our everyday lives and work. This unit will take you through the process of finding information from various sources, organising it effectively and citing it when necessary.

Students create short, snappy, written commercials about the main categories in the Dewey Decimal System. Commercials are viewed by the class to reinforce Dewey, and help students locate books in the Library Media Center. Dewey Commercials can be used in Library Media Center Orientation for grades 3-5.

A software library is a set of software functions used by an application program.

Students will combine classroom, library and computer lab time to research and construct knowledge about the 49 states. Students do not do their home state which is why only 49 states are used. Students will use their new research knowledge and the resources provided to construct a HyperStudio stack on their assigned state.
