Evolution of a Department as a Community of Learners

Abstract:: The 2002/2003 Seton Hall University (SHU) ELMP (Education Leadership, Management and Policy) Department objectives included developing a "learning community" or Community of Learners (COL) framework for ELMP to advance a research and scholarship culture and have a "researchable" element.
The Department developed a framework and concept paper to get started. Secondly, such a plan should be useful to meet NCATE Standard 5 to document faculty qualifications, performance and development. The ELMP working draft drew heavily from Boyer (1990) Scholarship Reconsidered to expand traditional ideas of "scholarship" and blend them into the COL. ELMP faculty reviewed and revised the paper and incorporated the COL in the ELMP Strategic Plan (8/05).
This paper explains the evolution of the COL, including the rationale, definitions and outcomes from the pilot usage. Initial indications are that ELMP faculty, students, and others are working collaboratively in the COL, which is the basis of expanded scholarship efforts.

Learners and Learning: Section 2, Learning to know what we donŐt know

Abstract:: Section Two begins to focus on how we learn in greater detail. In particular, it explores the following question: How is it possible for those who do not know something to come to know it?How do we, as teachers, enable learners to learn by moving them from the known to the unknown. We tackle this question by exploring the ways in which human minds: construct connections between ideas; use what is known to understand new and unknown things; are challenged to change old misunderstandings by new and contradictory understandings.

Abstract:: In Section Three we will build on these ideas with special reference to schooling. In particular, we want to focus on the following question:Should the kind of teaching and learning that occurs in schools be more like the learning that occurs in everyday life? How is school learning different from everyday learning, and how can teachers implement good school learning in their classrooms?

Abstract:: This section will explore the relationship between learners, text, and the world. We will find out how textbooks are written, how learners read, and how teachers can assist learners to read critically. What role do texts and literacy (reading and writing) play in learning, and how can teachers scaffold learning through texts?
