Collisions

Abstract:: 'Collisions' was written by Jane Wagner and is an unusual comedy/drama. It stars Lily Tomlin and other well known performers, such as Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner. The work attempts to integrate short video works by Stephen Beck, Ed Emshwiller, Louis Falco, Ron Hays, Stan Vanderbeek, and William Wegman. 'Collisions' tells the story of Eartha, a creature from the planet of Zymus, who agrees to take a human form and to observe the planet earth. Eartha inhabits Beth Barber (Lily Tomlin), a news reporter. At one point, Beth visits her family in Kentucky, who are played by Tomlin's actual family. Meanwhile, a panel of experts on a television program on Zymus monitor Eartha's impressions and contemplate whether or not to blow up the earth. Eventually, Eartha, who has come to respect the humans' vulnerability and depth of feeling, has a falling out with the panel. The fate of earth remains uncertain. This work was considered a 'failure' by Fred Barzyk and was never broadcast.

Joan Jonas in 'Double Lunar Dogs'

Abstract:: 'Double Lunar Dogs,' 1984, is an impressionistic, dramatic work by video artist Joan Jonas. It juxtaposes several scenes to create the picture of the life of the inhabitants of a traveling spaceship, whose destination has long since been forgotten, and who remember life on earth as it has been passed down to them from their ancestors on board the ship. The work addresses the question of what these travelers remember of Earth. In this short sequence, two women paint each other's portraits on transparent glass panels.

Abstract:: You will provide travel guidance to interplanetary travelers. You must ensure that travelers know enough about Mars to plan well, to know the best spots to visit, and at what time of year to visit them. You must become experts on Mars, so you can knowledgeably compare and contrast at most three possible resort locations on Mars to your customers. You need to know how to help travelers have safe and pleasant journeys and provide information they will need about Mars, about what they should take (raincoats, pressure suits, gravity shoes, sunglasses, sun screen, beach towels, snow skis, etc.) and what activities to expect (i.e. spelunking, rock climbing, snow skiing, swimming, sand sailing, etc.). You could create a book, brochure, slide presentation, mural , TV commercial, an infomercial, or an interactive web site, that will provide this and other information for your clients traveling to Mars.
