This course will cover fundamentals of digital communications and networking. We will study the basics of information theory, sampling and quantization, coding, modulation, signal detection and system performance in the presence of noise. The study of data networking will include multiple access, reliable packet transmission, routing and protocols of the internet. "How does a person experiencing anesthesia lose consciousness? Despite billions of surgeries, scientists still don’t fully understand what happens in the brain when a patient goes under. New research in the journal Anesthesiology, however, provides a few more clues. Working in a group of patients with epilepsy, scientists used a new information measure to evaluate electrocorticography data -- and found that with anesthesia, there is a reduction in information integration and network connectivity. The team recorded electrocorticograms, or intracranial E-E-Gs, from nine patients who were anesthetized predominantly with propofol and underwent surgical treatment for epilepsy in China. To assess information integration, the team used a measure called [genuine permutation cross mutual information], or G-P-C-M-I. In an earlier study, they found the measure performed better than others using scalp EEG recordings..."

"Adoptive cell therapy is a powerful anticancer strategy in which patients are administered extra immune cells. Often, the cells are engineered to express chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) that recognize specific cancer cell proteins (antigens), enabling cancer targeting. The strength of the anticancer effect depends on structures within the CARs called costimulatory domains. One such domain, 4-1BB, activates the NFκB signaling pathway, but the relationship between the amount of antigen present and the strength of the elicited response isn’t well described. To help, researchers recently developed a mathematical model of NFκB signaling induced by a 4-1BB-containing CAR. Simulations revealed that the degree of NFκB pathway activation differed in response to different antigen concentrations, but the timing was consistent. The model performed well even when the input parameters were changed, suggesting its reliability under different conditions..."

"Dysregulation of the IL-6-induced JAK/STAT cascade is associated with severe inflammatory and proliferative diseases. The cascade is normally tightly controlled by proteins such as the feedback inhibitor SOCS3 and the tyrosine phosphatase SHP2. SOCS3 increases the stability of late IL-6-induced STAT3 activation across cells with different STAT3 levels and reduces the signal magnitude. but whether SHP2 similarly affects robustness and information transfer remains unclear. Researchers recently used multiplexed single-cell analyses and information theory approaches to clarify SHP2’s roles. They found that SHP2 improved the robustness of STAT3 activation under basal conditions (in the absence of the cytokine IL-6) and during early IL-6 signalling levelling the degree of activation across cells with heterogeneous expression levels of STAT3. However, it did not affect the robustness of late IL-6-induced STAT3 activation..."

Topics include linear systems, difference equations, Z-transforms, sampling and sampling rate conversion, convolution, filtering, modulation, Fourier analysis, entropy, noise, and Shannon's fundamental theorems.
