A first-year graduate course in algorithms. Emphasizes fundamental algorithms and advanced methods of algorithmic design, analysis, and implementation. Data structures. Network flows. Linear programming. Computational geometry. Approximation algorithms.

Subject covers the analysis, design, implementation, and testing of various forms of digital communication based on group collaboration. Students are encouraged to think about the Web and other new digital interactive media not just in terms of technology but also broader issues such as language (verbal and visual), design, information architecture, communication and community. Students work in small groups on a semester-long project of their choice. Various written and oral presentations document project development.

16.225 is a graduate level course on Computational Mechanics of Materials. The primary focus of this course is on the teaching of state-of-the-art numerical methods for the analysis of the nonlinear continuum response of materials. The range of material behavior considered in this course will include: linear and finite deformation elasticity, inelasticity and dynamics. Numerical formulation and algorithms will include: Variational formulation and variational constitutive updates, finite element discretization, error estimation, constrained problems, time integration algorithms and convergence analysis. There will be a strong emphasis on the (parallel) computer implementation of algorithms in programming assignments. At the beginning of the course, the students will be given the source of a base code with all the elements of a finite element program which constitute overhead and do not contribute to the learning objectives of this course (assembly and equation-solving methods, etc.). Each assignment will consist of formulating and implementing on this basic platform, the increasingly complex algorithms resulting from the theory given in class, as well as in using the code to numerically solve specific problems. The application to real engineering applications and problems in engineering science will be stressed throughout.

In this course, the student will learn the theoretical and practical aspects of algorithms and Data Structures. The student will also learn to implement Data Structures and algorithms in C/C++, analyze those algorithms, and consider both their worst-case complexity and practical efficiency. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Identify elementary Data Structures using C/C++ programming languages; Analyze the importance and use of Abstract Data Types (ADTs); Design and implement elementary Data Structures such as arrays, trees, Stacks, Queues, and Hash Tables; Explain best, average, and worst-cases of an algorithm using Big-O notation; Describe the differences between the use of sequential and binary search algorithms. Students work with Lawrence Community Works, Inc. to involve constituents and generate solutions to an important planning problem in the City of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Final project presentations take place in a public forum, and serve to inform future development of the information infrastructure. Subject begins with an overview of the digital divide, e-government, public participation GIS, and neighborhood information systems. Subject includes a reflection component and a deliberate investigation of race, class, and gender dynamics.

Rather, competitive advantage is defined in terms of speed, innovativeness, adaptability, flexibility, and aggressiveness. In short, advantage comes from entrepreneurial management. Global Entrepreneurial Management (GEM) is a project-based capstone course. As a capstone experience, the course is meant to serve an integrative role, bringing together all the pieces and parts of your graduate business school education. The challenge in business today is to move away from functional silos and adopt an innovative, cross-functional approach to problem-solving. Consistent with this challenge, our focus will be on entrepreneurship, or the "pursuit of opportunity without regard to resources currently controlled." There is no aspect of business that is more inter-disciplinary and cross-functional than entrepreneurship. Further, this is a course that explores ways of thinking and ways of acting. Accordingly, we shall approach entrepreneurship as a mindset, an attitude, a way of managerial thinking. We shall also approach it as a behavior, an activity, a manageable process that can be applied in any organizational context And ultimately, we shall try to convey entrepreneurship as a philosophy of life -- as a philosophy for your life. The course explicitly addresses a common criticism directed at MBA students and programs. Concerns are frequently raised that graduate students and programs are strong on theory and strategic thinking, but short on the practical issues surrounding the implementation of these strategies and the pragmatic application of theories and concepts. As such, this is a course on implementation. The central focus will be on the GEM Project, where you not only have to come up with an innovative concept or idea, but you have to meet the test of implementation. You will also be responsible for addressing implementation issues as they apply to a series of cases. My challenge to you is to use this course to explore your own approach to management. You will be doing something entrepreneurial, as it is the central requirement of the course. So, make it something truly innovative -- something that makes a difference. Define yourself as an agent of change.
