This lesson will focus on the illustrations from "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats. The students will describe what makes illustrations worthy of a Caldecott Award. In addition, the students will complete an art project that will allow for creative critical thinking to compliment the illustrations in the book.

This lesson will help students understand ABA Form. Through listening activities, they will be able to distinguish the "A" section from the "B" section and the return of the "A" section. Other activities will also be used for illustration.

Students will draw snowmen using various tools in the illustration component of their program. Our students use KidWorks2 by Davidson but others may be used instead. They will then write original stories to accompany their illustrations.

Students will learn the meaning of illustration, will be introduced to a famous illustrator and will create an illustration based on the style of this particular artist.

Helping Hands explores fiction, non-fiction and multi-modal texts related to the 2004 Asian tsunami and its tragic aftermath. Opening the World through Journaling: Integrating Art, Science, and Language Arts teaches children to become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about the plants and animals in situ. In a set of nested exercises, students use games to gain confidence in drawing and writing as a way to gather information. Later, they employ these skills to put together a field guide, make treasure maps, and to write short stories and poems.

Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour allows students to explore the persuasive power of advertising by analysis of a narrative television advertisement and a short animated documentary. Taking Care of Earth Together allows students to explore pressing issues that relate to our shared responsibility to care for the environment for future generations, using picture books, spoken and multimodal texts, plays, poetry and songs. Students will read "Tarantula" by Jenny Feely. Then they will summarize what they have learned about tarantulas by writing descriptive words or phrases on a graphic organizer. Finally, using the Kid Pix Studio Deluxe (or other similar drawing program), students will write sentences about tarantulas and make an illustration.
