This workshop directed at individuals with basic htm and web page construction experience, demonstrates how to enhance your course webpages. We will demonstrate techniques in a platform independent manner such that you can add tutorials, quizzes, embedded sound, video, image maps and JavaScript to your course homepages. We will discuss the potential and limitations of enhanced webpages and the basic differences between the Internet and your own campus Intranet. We will show how to optimize your pages for delivery in either situation. Templates, and evaluation copies of current shareware applications will be given to participants and will be used during the session to prepare web pages. This session, while not advanced, is not really appropriate for individuals who have little or no background in web page construction.

Teaches basics of designing a dynamic web site with a database back end, including scripting languages, cookies, SQL, and HTML with the goal of building such a site as the main (group) project Emphasizes computer-human interface and the graphical display of information. Crucial to the project is the identification of a client with whom the group must work with throughout the month, designing specifications, implementing them, reviewing and evaluating, and testing. This is a real-life client who intends to host the site for the purposes of building a community.

The transition from high school and home to college and a new living environment can be a fascinating and interesting time, made all the more challenging and interesting by being at MIT. More than recording the first semester through a series of snapshots, this freshman seminar will attempt to teach photography as a method of seeing and a tool for better understanding new surroundings. Over the course of the semester, students will develop a body of work through a series of assignments, and then attempt to describe the conditions and emotions of their new environment in a cohesive final presentation.

Techniques of creating narratives that take advantage of the flexibility of form offered by the computer. Study of the structural properties of book-based narratives that experiment with digression, multiple points of view, disruptions of time and of storyline. Analysis of the structure and evaluation of the literary qualities of computer-based narratives including hypertexts, adventure games, and classic artificial intelligence programs like Eliza. With this base, students use authoring systems to model a variety of narrative techniques and to create their own fictions. Knowledge of programming helpful but not necessary.

This course will expose you to the basic fundamentals of the Internet and Web protocols, the different architectures that Web-related applications use, and the programming languages that enable the development of Web applications. The student will also cover matters of security and reliability in the development of web applications via the use of transport encryption and authentication. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the Internet and Web Protocols; demonstrate an understanding of Client-Server Architecture; explain how Web Software works; demonstrate an understanding of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) Programming concepts; demonstrate an understanding of basic JavaScript, AJAX, and Java Server Pages (JSP); demonstrate an understanding of Web Security and Encryption.
