This exercise is intended to reinforce the importance of Earth's atmosphere to living organisms. Topics include our bodies' interactions with the atmosphere; its composition and structure; and natural changes in the atmosphere (weather).

This activity is an extension of the common balloon cars, where students explore if and how different gases used as a fuel source effect the distances traveled by the cars.

We are constantly being exposed to the behavior of gases. Each time we pump up a tire, blow up a balloon, use a spray can, or experience the cooling of gases as they escape from a gas storage container, we are reminded of how gases behave with changes in temperature, volume, pressure, or number of particles. In an astronomical scale, we know that star formation involves contraction of gas clouds to produce dense, high-pressure cores capable of fusion reactions. These labs will help your students investigate the behavior of gases due to changes in variables like volume, temperature, and number of particles. This experience with molecular motion in gases can be extended to help students understand perpetual motion in all states of matter. Students can transfer this relationship to the change in temperature and the corresponding change in vibration of molecules in a solid.

This lab gives students the opportunity to find the optimum mixture of hydrogen and oxygen as they react on a micro-scale.

This is an oceanography education journal consisting of current oceanography research conducted at NASA by NASA, NOAA, and university researchers and educators. This journal is a collection of articles, classroom activities, readings, teacher/student questions, imagery and much more designed for the grade 9-12 biology/environmental/earth science classroom. There is nothing out there like it and since we do a great deal of oceanographical research at Goddard Space Flight Center and the Wallops Flight Facility, we thought who better to put this together then our Hydrospheric and Biospheric Sciences Laboratory. We also have an accompanying web site that will eventually contain all the journal information, as well as future instrument data that can be scaled to the university level.

In this activity students learn that elements are the basic building blocks of all things found on Earth and in space including water, the human body, and the Earth, the Sun, and the planets. By counting elements extracted from sample of beads designed to simulate a Genesis sampling grid, they will learn how the extraction of atoms from the Genesis samples help scientists have a better understanding of the abundances of elements in the solar wind. The hands-on experience helps students to discover that the elemental abundances from the sun can be used as a baseline to compare with the diverse bodies of our solar system. Thermodynamics is the study of energy and its transfers though work. This course will focus on the fundamentals of thermodynamics, including the First and Second Laws, thermodynamic properties, ideal gases, and equations of state. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Identify and use units and notations in thermodynamics; State and illustrate the first and second laws of thermodynamics; Identify and explain the concepts of entropy, enthalpy, specific energy, reversibility, and irreversibility; Apply the first and second laws of thermodynamics to formulate and solve engineering problems for (i) closed systems, (ii) open systems under steady-state and transient conditions, and (iii) power cycles; Use thermodynamic tables, charts, and equation of state (e.g. the ideal gas law) to obtain appropriate property data to solve thermodynamics problems.
