A development of the atomic molecular theory from the law of multiple proportions and law of definite proportions.
Introduces students to the basic tools in using data to make informed management decisions. Covers introductory probability, decision analysis, basic statistics, regression, simulation, and linear and nonlinear optimization. Computer spreadsheet exercises and examples drawn from marketing, finance, operations management, and other management functions. Restricted to Sloan Fellows.
The students will measure the surface area and wrapper area of five pieces of candy. They will use appropriate formulas and measuring techniques to complete information needed for a spreadsheet and database. They will write a letter to the company with the most wasted paper to explain how the waste affects them as consumers and a suggestion for correcting the problem.
By using string, students will discover a formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle.
This is a hands on lesson best used to introduce geometry students to 3-dimensional figures. Students will have the opportunity to draw 3-dimensionally and create collapsible figures which can be used to develop the standard surface area formulas.
This course begins with an introduction to the theory of computability, then proceeds to a detailed study of its most illustrious result: Kurt Gödel's theorem that, for any system of true arithmetical statements we might propose as an axiomatic basis for proving truths of arithmetic, there will be some arithmetical statements that we can recognize as true even though they don't follow from the system of axioms. In my opinion, which is widely shared, this is the most important single result in the entire history of logic, important not only on its own right but for the many applications of the technique by which it's proved. We'll discuss some of these applications, among them: Church's theorem that there is no algorithm for deciding when a formula is valid in the predicate calculus; Tarski's theorem that the set of true sentence of a language isn't definable within that language; and Gödel's second incompleteness theorem, which says that no consistent system of axioms can prove its own consistency.
Measuring volume isn't always easy. Some objects have regular or uniform shapes. The volume of these objects can usually be measured with a formula.

A web page and interactive applet showing the ways to calculate the area of a rhombus. The user can drag the vertices of the rhombus and the other points change automatically to ensure it remains a rhombus. A grid inside the shape allows students to estimate the area visually, then check against the actual computed area. The text on the page gives three different ways to calculate the area with a formula for each. The applet uses one of the methods to compute the area in real time, so it changes as the rhombus is reshaped with the mouse.
