Reading & Rhythm

Percussionist Steven Angel has developed an innovative program that uses rhythm to help struggling students improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Deceptively simple -- a facilitator taps out a basic rhythm while students read aloud -- the method relaxes students, helps them focus, and is effective in after-school intervention programs as well as traditional classrooms.

Building the Foundation - A Suggested Progression of Sub-skills to Achieve the Reading Standards: Foundational Skills in the Common Core State Standards

This document is based on an analysis that determined the sub-skills students need to achieve in each of the Foundational Skills (K–5) in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It contains five sections, each targeting one grade level in: Print Concepts, Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Word Recognition, and Fluency. It also includes instructional examples aligned to the sub-skills, giving teachers samples of activity types that facilitate acquisition of the sub-skills. Each chart includes up to three grade levels to inform instruction for students who are either struggling and need extra support or intervention, or for students performing above grade-level expectations and require enrichment, to allow a teacher to see which skills should have been mastered in the previous year and what students are preparing for in the upcoming years.

Exchanging Ideas by Sharing Journals: Interactive Response in the Classroom

Pairs of students respond to literature alternately in shared journals, responding to group read-alouds, independent reading, literature circles, or any instance that pairs of students are exposed to the same texts. Interactive journals are valuable because they motivate students to develop their voices as "active speakers and writers", and this active participation in making meaning of the texts that they encounter leads to deeper comprehension. Furthermore, because of the combination of drawing, writing, and reading, interactive journals are a valuable tool for ELL instruction. Because they allow students to observe classmates oral and written interactions around literacy interactive journals can be used to encourage and support ELL students as they take more risks with their writing topics, content, and skills.
Increasing Reading Fluency of Elementary Students: Information for the Educational Leader to Use in Making Decisions

Educational leaders need to ask themselves how it is possible that nearly 40% of 329,969 Texas fourth grade students are reading below grade level? With accountability standards rising, how does any school with an at-risk population produce fluent readers and in turn master grade level expectations? Scholars agree that meaning derives from phrases, not isolated words. How many elementary students are still struggling with word-by-word reading? The purpose of this paper is to assist educational leaders in identifying best practices related to specific fluency interventions and to call attention to the topic of explicit fluency instruction. The identification of best practices for improving reading fluency is important for educational leaders such as principals to know and use in basing important decisions regarding reading programs.

The Starfall reading program is designed to be fun, exciting, and to instill confidence in young children as they learn to read. The website and companion printed materials are clear and effective tools to help you implement proven teaching methods. Our website was created by carefully observing the way children learn using a computer. The Starfall Website is easy for students to navigate independently, but it is not intended as a surrogate for the teacher.

Primarily designed for first grade, Starfall is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade.
