Symbiosis is defined as one organism living on, in, or with another organism. Three primary categories are mutualism (both organisms benefit), commensalism (commensal benefits and host not affected), and parasitism (parasite benefits and host harmed). Hands-on dissection of host animals provides examples of live symbiotes in all three types of symbiosis: mutualism: termite flagellates and rumen ciliates; commensalism: Leptomonas flagellates in Drosophila; parasitism: fish hosts (monogeneans on gills, larval digeneans and acanthocephalans in liver) and frogs (trematodes in lungs and bladder; ciliates, flagellates and opalinids in large intestine/cloaca). Possible changes in a relationship from commensalism to parasitism are discussed relative to a demonstration of tapeworm life cycle stages in rat and beetle hosts.

This course covers the development of the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics and their simplifications for several areas of marine hydrodynamics and the application of these principles to the solution of engineering problems. Topics include the principles of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, lift and drag forces, laminar and turbulent flows, dimensional analysis, added mass, and linear surface waves, including wave velocities, propagation phenomena, and descriptions of real sea waves. Wave forces on structures are treated in the context of design and basic seakeeping analysis of ships and offshore platforms. Geophysical fluid dynamics will also be addressed including distributions of salinity, temperature, and density; heat balance in the ocean; major ocean circulations and geostrophic flows; and the influence of wind stress. Experimental projects conducted in ocean engineering laboratories illustrating concepts taught in class, including ship resistance and model testing, lift and drag forces on submerged bodies, and vehicle propulsion.

This course will touch upon a number of different subfields of biological study within the context of the ocean environment. The course will begin by studying the geologic and meteorologic processes that create the oceans and affect their environment, including the specific environmental challenges facing marine life. Also taking a broad look at oceanic biodiversity before examining the interconnections between species in marine communities, the course will conclude with a quick look at current research in Marine Biology. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: compare and contrast ocean and terrestrial environments, and describe the properties of the marine environment that are associated with specific marine adaptations; list the members of marine food webs and, based on descriptions of specific species, identify their roles within food webs and the effects of changes in their abundance on overall food-web dynamics; describe the difference between various life-history types (e.g. gonochoristic species vs. sex changers vs. simultaneous hermaphrodites; complex vs. simple life history), and identify the physiological and ecological conditions under which certain life-history traits are considered to be advantageous over others; list and identify phyla/species of marine organisms, and describe their taxonomic relationships and the fundamental characteristics of their groups; distinguish between different marine zones in terms of their biotic and abiotic characteristics and the factors that affect their communities; design a marine-protected area based on the organisms or region in need of protection; explain the major types, causes, and effects of marine threats such as pollution, overfishing, global warming and ocean acidification, and invasive species, as well as describe the consequences of these threats for marine communities and organisms; analyze current research in marine biology, evaluating the interpretation and results of these experiments. Meet the Marine BiOLogists is part of OLogy, where kids can collect virtual trading cards and create projects with them. Here, they meet three kids and one scientist who dive deep when it comes to learning about the ocean: Gabriela, an 11-year-old from New York whose interest in marine biology began with a family trip she took to the West Indies when she was five. Gwyneth, an 11-year-old from California who likes observing the sea birds when she visits her father's beach house. Luke, a nine-year-old from Belfast, Ireland, who watches the seals play in the Atlantic Ocean each summer during his two-month holiday at Portrush, on Ireland's north coast. Melanie Stiassny, an ichthyologist at the museum, who answers kids questions, including "Does identifying fish make a difference?" and "How do you know when you've discovered a new species?"

The Nancy Creek Challenge is part of the Starting Point module. The Case study requires students to examine fish kill in Nancy Creek and identify the environmental conditions that favor life in a fresh water ecosystem. Students will work in small groups to assess the situation. The group will be allowed to gather resources from various places in an effort to develop a possible solution for the situation.
