Frameworks of Urban Governance, January (IAP) 2007

Abstract:: Urban governance comprises the various forces, institutions, and movements that guide economic and physical development, the distribution of resources, social interactions, and other aspects of daily life in urban areas. This course examines governance from legal, political, social, and economic perspectives. In addition, we will discuss how these structures constrain collective decision making about particular urban issues (immigration, education…). Assignments will be nightly readings and a short paper relating an urban issue to the frameworks outlined in the class.

Abstract:: Examines the role that courts and grassroots groups play in shaping public policy, at the global level and in selected countries. Primary focus on the impact of the relationship between courts and grassroots activism, on current issues like trade, environmental regulation, and human rights enforcement. In addition to recent international public policy institutional processes including the World Trade Organization and the World Bank, case studies from key countries like the US and India are examined. Introduction to theoretical frameworks from legal and social movement theories applied to court opinions, legislation, treaties, law-related articles, and policy-oriented materials.

Abstract:: Public Lands for the People is non-profit organization 'dedicated to preserving the rights of the public to access and use of public lands'. The site's purpose is to educate people and government agencies about their rights and the laws that apply to them, with a focus on the use of unappropriated public lands. It includes a legal resource page, with links to everything from the Federalist papers to the UN Declaration of Human Rights. There is also a suggested challenge page highlighting the procedure for addressing a legality challenge while pursuing outdoor activities. Also available is a discussion forum for submitting questions and opinions regarding public land use issues.
