The CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) website provides access to a broad array of public health information. From the WONDER website, users can search for and read published documents on public health concerns, including reports, recommendations and guidelines, articles and statistical research data published by CDC, as well as reference materials and bibliographies on health-related topics. Users can also query numeric data sets on CDC's mainframe and other computers, via "fill-in-the blank" web pages. Data sets include mortality (deaths), cancer incidence, HIV and AIDS, behavioral risk factors, diabetes, natality (births), census data and many other topics.

It is a collection of articles written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work. The Envirofacts Data Warehouse website provides access to several EPA databases that offer information about environmental activities that may affect air, water, and land anywhere in the United States. Users can search a pre-assembled sampling of information available pertaining to a specific area, or choose a topic for more in-depth information about a specific locale.

HazDat, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's (ATSDR) Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database, is the scientific and administrative database developed to provide access to information on the release of hazardous substances from Superfund sites or from emergency events and on the effects of hazardous substances on the health of human populations. The following information is included in HazDat: site characteristics, activities and site events, contaminants found, contaminant media and maximum concentration levels, impact on population, community health concerns, ATSDR public health threat categorization, ATSDR recommendations, environmental fate of hazardous substances, exposure routes, and physical hazards at the site/event. Users can search data by site activity, site contamination, toxicological profiles and public health assessments text.

This course explores the application of environmental and economic development planning, policy and management approaches to urban neighborhood community development. Through an applied service learning approach, the course requires students to prepare a sustainable development plan for a community-based non-profit organization. Through this client-based planning project, students will have the opportunity to test how sustainable development concepts and different economic and environmental planning approaches can be applied to advance specific community goals within the constraints of specific neighborhoods and community organizations.

TOXMAP is a Geographic Information System (GIS) from the National Library of Medicine that uses maps of the United States to help users visually explore data from the EPA's Toxics Release Inventory. TOXMAP maps show where reported chemicals are released on-site into the air, water, and ground. The maps also identify the releasing facilities, single year releases, and chemical release trends over time.

ToxMystery was created by the United States National Library of Medicine to help children from 7-11 years old learn about household chemical hazards. Toxie the Cat helps kids find the hazards hidden in each room and offers hints when needed. When all the risky spots in the house have been discovered, Toxie dances and celebrates and players can print a personalized certificate of completion. ToxMystery has been usability tested by kids and educators, receiving high grades by all.

ToxMystery is available in English and Spanish. Players can toggle between the languages without losing their place in the game, extending the game to language classes. ToxMystery not only educates young learners but provides parents and teachers with resources on environmental health. Parents can click on the "Parent Resources" or "Para los padres" tabs to find links to U.S. government and non-profit organization Web sites about everyday environmental hazards. The "For Teachers" or "Para maestros" pages contain 3 lesson plans with student worksheets and activities that use ToxMystery to explore common household chemical hazards.

This lesson plan will introduce students to potential environmental health hazards in their day-to-day environment. Students will be introduced to ToxMystery, a computer game activity, and either individually or in groups, they will find potential environmental health hazards in each room of the house that is presented by the game. They will then answer multiple choice uestions posed by the game about the hazards they encounter and complete assigned activity sheets.

This lesson plan is a follow-up lesson to the introductory ToxMystery activity lesson. It is a paper-based activity that incorporates the character “Toxie” from the computer game activity into a detectives’ “Case Book”. Students will work with the packet “Catch That Hazard!!!”

They will follow the clues provided, and work with the ToxMystery computer game activity to fill in the clues. The chemicals to be investigated are introduced on the cover of the Case Book activity packet. After reviewing the clues with the ToxMystery game the students will fill out the final sheet of the Case Book packet.

This lesson plan will extend the inquiry started in the ToxMystery activities by introducing students to the world of acidity and alkalinity in household products.

Using case studies from the world's four major developing regions, including (among others) Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Managua, Singapore, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Kabul, Beirut, Cairo, Kinshasa, Cape Town and Johannesburg, it explores the economic and political dynamics that grease the wheels of contemporary patterns of growth.
