- Abstract:
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to ethics in business and provides modules in Ethical Leadership, Ethical Decision-Making, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance. Students will actively study ethical theory by carrying out exercises to help them build theory-based tools for encountering ethical problems in business practice. They will also work with cases in business ethics designed to give them practice in developing skills of ethical leadership, ethical decision-making, and carrying out socio-technical analyses to respond to issues of social responsibility. This course will culminate in an Ethics Bowl competition in which students will practice ethics advocacy in a variety of organizational contexts in business. - Abstract:
EAC (ethics across the curriculum) requires as its foundation a solid program of assessment. This module includes several assessment forms from which browsers can choose. The range responds to a wide variety of assessment situations. From one end, a Muddy Point exercise asks students to identify the strongest and weakest points of a module. At the other end, a rubric based on scoring criteria used in the Ethics Bowl competition held at UPRM (based on the national competition held annually at the conferences of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics) provides a fairly fine grained assessment of a capstone ethics integration exercise. This document makes use of an Instructor Module template designed to help structure the authoring and sharing of Ethics Across the Curriculum Integration modules that are being developed through the NSF funded EAC Toolkit Project (SES-0551779). It solicits pedagogical information for instructors regarding the assessment of student modules based on the experiences and expertise of the authors, co-authors and EAC community members. This is a preliminary version of a course in Engineering Ethics based that pulls together Connexions modules that were used as part of an Engineering Ethics course taught by William Frey in fall 2006. An Engineering Ethics Bowl competition formed the capstone experience of this course. Frey, Cruz, and Sanchez have reported in detail on the Engineering Ethics Bowl in "The Ethics Bowl in Engineering Ethics at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez," in Teaching Ethics, Volume 4, number 2, Spring 2004: 15-31. The major change in this activity reported in this course is the use of peer review teams to score the competition. This course in Engineering Ethics is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," SES 0551779.

- Abstract:
Recent work in moral psychology demonstrates that case discussion helps students to refine decision making techniques, leads them to question unexamined attitudes, and helps improve their moral reasoning. This module works with these developments by providing students with short, realistic scenarios whose narratives end at crucial points of decision. Students are provided with solutions that bring the narrative to a close and are asked to evaluate and rank them by using ethics and feasibility tests. The format bears a superficial resemblance to the Gray Matters exercise currently being used at Boeing Corporation in their ethics training program. But this particular version is more open-ended (students are invited to design their own solutions) and more oriented toward getting students to think about ethical issues and values. The first UPRM version of this module was introduced during an NSF funded retreat (SBR-9810253) held at Maricao, Puerto Rico in 1999. Different versions of this activity have been used in engineering, computer, and business ethics classes.

- Abstract:
This module has been built around a presentation given at the Teaching Business Ethics Conference on June 8, 2006. It outlines the ethics across the curriculum program being implemented at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez by discussing (1) a hybrid approach to ethics across the curriculum (EAC) that combines freestanding courses in practical and professional ethics with ethics integration modules for mainstream BSE (business, science, and engineering) courses, (2) an EAC Matrix that identifies existing ethics integration projects and correlates them with moral objectives and accreditation goals, (3) an EAC Toolkit designed to generate pedagogical best practices, and (4) a summary of the process carried out in Business Administration at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez that culminated in the adoption of a Statement of Values for faculty, administration, students and staff. The purpose of this module is to describe these components of the EAC program in some detail and show how they fit together into a broad, comprehensive strategy for integrating ethics into the mainstream business, science, and engineering curriculum.
