Expanding the Nature of Science in Teaching Laboratories: From Ethology to Investigating Animal Behavior

Abstract:: The instructor's section of this chapter considers some of the general challenges associated with converting a descriptive laboratory exercise to an inquiry exercise. It also contains the detailed methods of our current version of this animal behavior investigation. The second major section of this chapter contains the current student's version of this exercise. In this section students are led through initial observations of crickets and through the process of hypothesis formation about relationships between dominance hierarchies and mating behaviors. They then design and conduct an experiment using crickets to evaluate their hypothesis.

Game Theory, Fall 2008

Abstract:: This is a standard course in "game theory," designed with the School of Information MSI students as the primary audience. This course is the pre-requisite for several ICD courses. To be well-prepared for management, policy and analysis in the information professions you need to first have a solid grounding in game theory and its applications to problem solving. Thus, the primary objective is to teach you a set of useful theories and how to apply them to solve problems. The emphasis is on method and application.

Abstract:: Students randomly select jelly beans (or other candy) that represent genes for several human traits such as tongue-rolling ability and eye color. Then, working in pairs (preferably of mixed gender), students randomly choose new pairs of jelly beans from those corresponding to their own genotypes. The new pairs are placed on toothpicks to represent the chromosomes of the couple's offspring. Finally, students compare genotypes and phenotypes of parents and offspring for all the "couples" in the class. In particular, they look to see if there are cases where parents and offspring share the exact same genotype and/or phenotype, and consider how the results would differ if they repeated the simulation using more than four traits.

Abstract:: In a class discussion format, the teacher presents background information about basic human genetics. The number of chromosomes in both body cells and egg and sperm cells is covered, as well as the concept of dominant and recessive alleles. Students determine whether or not they possess the dominant allele for the tongue-rolling gene as an example.
