This site introduces students to one instance in which immigrants overcame the ramifications of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 through the U.S. judicial system. This lesson correlates to the National History Standards and National Standards for Civics and Social Sciences. It also has cross-curricular connections with history, government, language arts, and math.

Hope Kelly reports on a dispute between the tenants and the landlords of a building in Allston. Kelly notes that the tenants have brought suit against the landlords for discriminatory practices. Kelly reports that a fire damaged the building in February. She notes that the landlords have aided white tenants with temporary relocation and have assured them an eventual return to their apartments. Kelly reports that African American tenants have been ignored. Kelly reports that the tenants have been barred from the building altogether. Kelly's report includes footage of a protest outside the apartment building by tenants and city officials. Brian McLoughlin (Boston City Council), Mel King (community activist), Domenic Bozzotto (Hotel Workers Union), and David Scondras (Boston City Council) are among those present. Tenants and city officials condemn the owners of the building and demand the return of tenants to the building. Kelly reviews the status of the lawsuit and gives the names of the owners of the building. She attempts to interview David Spada (owner) when he arrives at the building. Spada refuses to be interviewed.

"American Made" is a film about a Sikh American family whose car breaks down en route to the Grand Canyon, and their only hope for escape is the remote desert highway and the occasional passing car. When car after car fails to stop, family members are forced to confront their notions of faith, conformity, tradition, and sacrifice-and question what it means to be "American" today. This lesson plan includes discussion activities about the definition of family, cultural research activities, and writing assignments related to students' personal histories.

Christy George reports that poor neighborhoods lack access to banking services. George notes that banking leaders met with community leaders today to announce an agreement that will provide better banking services to poor neighborhoods. George reviews the details of the agreement, which will provide bank branches, loans, and increased investment to poor neighborhoods. George's report includes footage of the meeting of banking and community leaders. Richard Pollard (Massachusetts Bankers Association) says that redlining did not take place in the 1980s. Charles Stith (Organization for a New Equality), Bruce Bolling (Boston City Council), Willie Jones (Community Investment Coalition), John Hamill (Shawmut Bank), and Ronald Homer (Boston Bank of Commerce) all speak out in favor of the proposal. Michael Dukakis (Governor of Massachusetts) is present at the meeting. George reports that the agreement forces banks to restructure their rules in order to serve poor people. David Boeri reports that Ray Flynn (Mayor of Boston) and the Boston City Council will work together to create a public housing policy that ensures equal access while providing some element of choice. Boeri notes that the city must comply with the policy of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) if they wish to continue receiving federal funds. Boeri's report includes footage of Flynn, Charles Yancey (Boston City Council), and Bruce Bolling (Boston City Council) at a press conference about fair housing policy. Boeri's report also features footage from an interview with James Kelly (Boston City Council). Kelly says that free choice is more important than racial diversity. Boeri reviews the current housing policy and the policy requirements of HUD. Dinizulu Kamau and Abdullah Khalil Sabree comment on the Hakim Jamal murder case. Part two of Say Brother's discussion of the harsh sentencing of African Americans in the Massachusetts court system. Program focuses on the history of the De Mau Mau (a Black Panthers-type group organized by African American veterans returning from the Vietnam War) and the five Boston-based De Mau Mau members convicted in the murder of Hakim Jamal. In documentary format, Barbara Barrow-Murray speaks with Philip Key (Boston's De Mau Mau leader), Walpole inmates Dinizulu Kamau and Abdullah Khalil Sabree (convicted of Jamal's murder) and Mrs. Gaskin ('Mama G.,' mother of the appointed De Mau Mau leader after Key went into hiding) about the De Mau Mau, the events of the day Jamal was murdered, and the legal battle that followed. Program includes brief commentary by Larry Gaines (Chairman of the Citywide Coalition for Justice and Equality) and Saundra Carney (Coordinator for Brown, Clinkscales and Johnson Support Committee). In 1948, President Harry Truman took an early step towards civil rights reform by issuing Executive Order 9981, which eliminated racial segregation in the military. After World War II, African Americans ? then often called Negroes or "coloreds," began to mobilize against discrimination. They demanded an end to segregation and fought for equality in education, housing, and employment opportunities. The images in this topic show that by the 1960s, their struggle ? which began in the segregated South ? had reached California. As a number of photographs in this topic show, many Californians showed their support for Civil Rights activists and victims of racial discrimination in the South by holding marches, rallies, and demonstrations urging equality for African Americans. In one image three white children in San Francisco hold a sign in support of the four young black girls killed in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Photographs also show people in San Francisco boycotting Kress and Woolworth's department stores, sites of racial discrimination in the South. Documents shown here include a flyer urging the boycott of the stores; and a Western Union telegram sent in 1963, stating that Civil Rights activists Roy Wilkins and Medgar Evers were arrested attempting to picket Woolworth's in Jackson, Mississippi. Two photographs of memorials for slain civil rights leaders ? a march in honor Medgar Evers in 1963, in Los Angeles, and a memorial in the San Francisco Bay Area for Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968 ? show racially mixed crowds in attendance. But not all Californians sympathized with the Civil Rights movement. Images of racial hatred and prejudice are reflected in the photograph of an African American woman holding a rock that had been thrown through an office window, and Klu Klux Klan graffiti spray-painted on a home. Various groups formed to fight in the struggle for equal rights. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), formed in 1909, entered a new phase during this period, leading in the organized struggle for civil rights. An example of how the NAACP communicated about events is reflected in a letter from the Alameda County branch of the NAACP on June 13, 1950, which reported segregation on the Southern Pacific Railroad trains leaving Los Angeles. A flyer promoting the boycott of California grapes exemplifies NAACP support for other rights movements, in this case the United Farm Workers. Other flyers urged Californians to fight sharecropper wages and "Keep Mississippi Out of California." Groups such as the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and student groups also protested segregation and incidents of racial discrimination in the South. Several important African American leaders ? including Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, and Ralph Abernathy ? all came to California, as documented by photographs included here. Sometimes, the price of fighting for social justice was high. Two images capture events held for leaders in the social justice movement who were assassinated: the 1963 memorial march in Los Angeles for civil rights leader Medgar Evers; and a crowd attending a Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Rally in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Hope Kelly reports on charges of racism against the Boston Irish Rowing Club. Kelly notes that Larry Otway (President, St. Brendan's Rowing Club of New York) said that he was discouraged from bringing African American rowers to compete against the Boston Irish Rowing Club in South Boston. Kelly adds that Otway later rescinded his accusations. Kelly reports that Ray Flynn (Mayor of Boston) held a press conference to cite progress in fighting racism across the city. Kelly's report is accompanied by footage of Flynn's press conference. Flynn, William Geary (Commissioner, Metropolitan District Commission), Bruce Bolling (Boston City Council), John Joyce (President, Boston Irish Rowing Club), and Otway speak at the press conference. Joyce denies any discriminatory practices on the part of the Boston Irish Rowing Club. Kelly reports that Andrew Jones (Greater Roxbury Incorporation Project ) and Curtis Davis (Greater Roxbury Incorporation Project) held a rival press conference in front of the L Street Bath House in South Boston. Kelly's report includes footage of Davis and Jones speaking out against racism at their press conference. Jerry Cullitary (South Boston resident) defends South Boston against charges of racism. Kelly reports that the two press conferences presented opposing points of view on racism in Boston. Kelly interviews Susan Moir (South Boston resident) about racism in South Boston. Kelly's report is accompanied by footage of people rowing in curraghs on Pleasure Bay.

The goal of this seminar is to have open discussions of controversial political and social issues and raise awareness of current world events in an informal setting. Discussions for the first part of each class will focus on current events from that week, while in the second part of class students will discuss a scheduled issue in greater detail. Scheduled issues include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the regulation of marijuana, how our society should punish criminals, genocide in Rwanda and Sudan, discrimination in our society today, the future of social security, whether pornography is sexist, and where we can go from here in the Arab/Israeli Conflict. Discussions will be supplemented by readings, films, and public speakers. Students will also be encouraged to read news media from around the world.

Christy George reports that a lawsuit has been filed against the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to protest its discriminatory housing policies. George notes that the lawsuit charges that the BHA has discouraged minorities from moving into all-white housing projects. George adds that the city is planning to voluntarily integrate its housing projects by next year. George interviews Tanya Boman and Annie Hailey, who are among the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Boman and Hailey talk about their experience with the BHA. George reports that both women were told that their families would be unsafe in white housing projects and that the BHA would not provide them with protection. George notes that African American families in white housing projects may be victims of harassment. George's report includes footage from an interview with Doris Bunte (BHA). Bunte denies any discriminatory practices on the part of BHA employees. George interviews James Kelly (Boston City Council). Kelly defends the BHA and denounces public housing integration. George reports that Kelly has proposed an alternative public housing integration plan that eliminates preferences for minority families applying for apartments in white housing projects. " This course is a survey of world economic history, and it introduces economics students to the subject matter and methodology of economic history. It is designed to expand the range of empirical settings in students' research by drawing upon historical material and long-run data. Topics are chosen to show a wide variety of historical experience and illuminate the process of industrialization. The emphasis will be on questions related to labor markets and economic growth."

Discrimination in the labour market exists in many forms: the 'glass ceiling' ageism, racism, etc. This unit will help you look at this problem with a new perspective: through economics. You will learn how economists have tried to understand what drives this distortion of the labour market and why women and the ethnic minorities seem to suffer the most.

Access to water is very unequal in Mexico and indigenous municipalities are particularly disadvantaged. The paper analyzes empirically the unequal access to water across Mexican municipalities and across individuals for the period of 2000-2005 using regression analysis. The contributions of this paper are two-fold. First, it expands the focus of the literature of ethnic fragmentation and public good provisions from level to distribution; and second, it presents an ethnic fractionalization index at the municipality level based on salient ethnic divide. The results show that there is a systematic water gap between indigenous and non-indigenous populations, even after controlling for various factors. The findings suggest that explanations of the negative relationship are related to discrimination and marginalization rather than differences in preferences across ethnically diverse groups.

This course focuses on a range of theories of gender in modern life. In recent years feminist scholars in a range of disciplines have challenged previously accepted notions of political theory such as the distinctions between public and private, the definitions of politics itself, the nature of citizenship, and the roles of women in civil society. In this course we will examine different aspects of women's lives through the life cycle as seen from the vantage point of feminist theory. In addition we will consider different ways of looking at power and political culture in modern societies, issues of race and class, poverty and welfare, and sexuality and morality.

Callie Crossley reports that the state of Massachusetts has decided to allow businesses and insurance companies to test people for the AIDS antibody. Crossley reports that critics complain that the proposed policy favors insurance companies over patients. Crossley's report includes footage of Paula Gold (Secretary of Consumer Affairs) at a press conference. Gold says that testing will be allowed under limited circumstances and controlled conditions. Crossley notes that the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts is a strong opponent of the policy. Crossley's report includes footage of Don Polk (Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts) at a press conference. Polk condemns involuntary testing except for clear public health reasons. Crossley reports that Polk believes that the policy does not contain appropriate measures to ensure patient confidentiality. She adds that Polk believes the policy to be discriminatory against African American life insurance policy holders. At the press conference, Polk says that the proposed policy fails to take into account the discrepancy in life expectancy between African American AIDS victims and white AIDS victims. Crossley reports the Urban League believes that the new state policy de-emphasizes public health education campaigns, which are important in minority communities. Hope Kelly reports on the removal of Judge Paul King (former Chief Justice, Dorchester District Court) from his position at Dorchester District Court. Kelly notes that the State Supreme Court demoted King for misconduct in and out of court, including sexist remarks, racist standards for setting bail and for public drunkenness. Kelly reviews the incidents leading to King's demotion. Kelly reports that King was transferred to Stoughton District Court, where he is only allowed to sit on civil cases. Kelly's report includes shots of newspaper articles covering the story and footage of lawyers, clerks, and defendants in a courtroom.

David Boeri reports that Kathy Gannett (former HUD employee) has settled a wrongful dismissal complaint against the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Boeri notes that Gannett claims that she was fired for filing a complaint with HUD against the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) for discriminatory housing policies. Boeri reports that HUD officials claim that Gannett was fired for inappropriately questioning Doris Bunte (BHA) during a meeting. Boeri interviews Gannett and Elizabeth Rogers (attorney for Gannett). Gannett talks about the case. Gannett says that her complaint against the BHA was ignored. Gannett says that she did not question Bunte inappropriately. Boeri quotes Bunte as saying that Gannett was 'hostile' to her during a meeting. Boeri adds that Gannett questioned Bunte about security for minority families in white housing projects. Christy George reports that James Kelly (Boston City Council) objects to an interfaith, interracial prayer service to be held in South Boston because he fears that the meeting could be seen as an endorsement of the city's plan to integrate South Boston housing projects. George notes that Kelly has called for the meeting to be moved to another location.
