Introduces the study of aging, its implications for individuals, families, and society, and the background for health policy related to older persons. Presents an overview on aging from different perspectives: demography, biology, epidemiology of diseases, physical and mental disorders, functional capacity and disability, health services, federal and state health policies, social aspects of aging, and ethical issues in the care of older individuals.

Over the past three decades, the discipline of Disability Studies has emerged as an independent field within the social science research and theoretical arena. Questions surrounding the nature and origin of oppressive societal responses to impairment - ranging from service installations to bureaucratic policies, linguistic conventions to exclusionary practices - are the primary concern of the field. Disability Studies attempts to examine and debunk the 'disabled' identity as one ascribed to individuals arbitrarily, yet selectively, designated as disabled. Broadly, key theoretical positions within the field assert that the negatively valued and ascribed group identity of being disabled is one which serves, through the operation of complex ideological machinery, to justify and obscure the systematic exclusion of persons, so designated, from equitable participation in the production of culture. This study looks at dynamics of human rights and disability within higher education institutions from this perspective.

The Human Rights Key serves as a valuable infographic to guide students to connect their classroom learning with the reality of local regional and international health and human rights issues. The framework enables students in the health professions to recognize relationships and connections between human rights, their own personal realities, legal mechanisms, and their future clinical practice. The tool was developed for Year 3 medical students in their Obstetrics and Gynaecology rotation. The heuristic Human Rights Key promotes their learning for and about human rights in women's health. It provides a medium to guide self-reflection through a sequential process helping clarify complex concepts. Health professionals are in powerful positions to advance social justice as duty bearers and as rights holders. The Health Sciences Faculty at the University of Cape Town, UCT South Africa, has included human rights learning in its reformed curriculum since 2002, in recognition of the need to develop socially responsible practitioners.

This course introduces students to the basic concepts and methods of moral and political philosophy. Its primary focus is on the development of moral reasoning skills and the application of those skills to contemporary social and political issues. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Discuss several major theories of justice and morality, including utilitarianism, libertarianism, social contract theory, deontology, and the ethics/politics of virtue; Demonstrate how moral and political dilemmas are handled differently by each set of theoretical principles; Develop their analytical skills through interpreting the consequences of various moral principles and revising principles to correspond with their own conceptions of justice; Discuss the relationship between morality and politics; Formulate their own positions concerning moral and political principles, especially in regards to particular issues discussed in this course; Discuss the origins of western democratic politics and constitutional government; Address a range of difficult and controversial moral and political issues, including murder, the income tax, corporate cost-benefit analysis, lying, affirmative action, and same-sex marriage. Students are introduced to various types of hearing impairments and the types of biomedical devices that engineers have designed to aid people with this physical disability.

Students will participate in a variety of activities modeling different disabilities. After discussing their experiences, students work in teams to devise or improve on an adaptive device.

Students follow the steps of the engineering design process to create their own ear trumpet devices (used before modern-day hearing aids), including testing them with a set of reproducible sounds. They learn to recognize different pitches, and see how engineers must test designs and materials to achieve the best amplifying properties.

Presents quantitative approaches to measurement in the psychological and social sciences. Topics include the principles of psychometrics, including reliability and validity; the statistical basis for latent variable analysis, including exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and latent class analysis; and item response theory. Draws examples from the social sciences, including stress and distress, social class and socioeconomic status, personality; consumer satisfaction, functional impairment and disability, quality of life, and the measurement of overall health status. Intended for doctoral students.

Presents quantitative approaches to theory construction in the context of multiple response variables, with models for both continuous and categorical data. Topics include the statistical basis for causal inference; principles of path analysis; linear structural equation analysis incorporating measurement models; latent class regression; and analysis of panel data with observed and latent variable models. Draws examples from the social sciences, including the status attainment approach to intergenerational mobility, behavior genetics models of disease and environment, consumer satisfaction, functional impairment and disability, and quality of life.

The underlying premise of this unit is that we are all experts in different ways, and that our different experiences and understandings are of value. Inclusive education is presented and discussed as under construction, both in educational settings and as a concept. The materials to be found in this unit are largely rooted in the social model of disability and human/disability rights frameworks.

"According to the United States Agency for International Development, 20 million people in developing countries require wheelchairs, and the United Nations Development Programme estimates below 1% of their need is being met in Africa by local production. Wheelchair Design in Developing Countries (WDDC) gives students the chance to better the lives of others by improving wheelchairs and tricycles made in the developing world. Lectures will focus on understanding local factors, such as operating environments, social stigmas against the disabled, and manufacturing constraints, and then applying sound scientific/engineering knowledge to develop appropriate technical solutions. Multidisciplinary student teams will conduct term-long projects on topics such as hardware design, manufacturing optimization, biomechanics modeling, and business plan development. Theory will further be connected to real-world implementation during guest lectures by MIT faculty, Third-World community partners, and U.S. wheelchair organizations.
