This module represents the preferred pronunciation of English by using the IPA, International Phonetic Alphabet. The IPA allows for consistent pronunciation of both vowels and consonants. Conductors should use the IPA and teach it to the chorus. Once established, the diction of the ensemble will improve and be more consistent.
This module represents a discussion and illustration of marcato and legato diction. Both types of diction occur in choral singing and the conductor and singer must recognize the difference and understand how to sing each. Music examples ae given to llustrate when each should be used.
This module demonstrates the correct pronunciation of several commonly mispronounced prefixes that occur often in the singing of English. The correct pronunciation is given in each instance.
This module represents a discussion of the flow of syllables and the pronunciation of them in choral singing. Special attention is given to the unstressed syllable in English. It is too often given as much stress as other syllables and mispronounced, which projects a stilted, unmusical projection of the language of a the piece of music.
