Students are expected to have some familiarity with scientific application software and a basic understanding of at least one contemporary programming language (C, C++, Java, Lisp, Perl, Python, etc.). A major term project is required of all students. Reading is assigned from the contemporary literature, and there is occasional homework.

This lesson plan creates a classroom database collecting information on books that students have read over a period of time determined by the teacher and/or students. By sorting and filtering, students evaluate the data and can later create other products from their findings.

Students will work together in small groups of four to six students to solve the following word problems. Their solutions will require them to practice interview techniques and create a database and/or spreadsheet of their results. This information will be the basis of the answers to the following eight word problems. Skills such as area, cost, calorie count, ratio, percentage and scale, as well as persuasive writing will be applied.

Introduces abstraction as an important mechanism for problem decomposition and solution formulation in the biomedical domain, and examines computer representation, storage, retrieval, and manipulation of biomedical data. Examines effect of programming paradigm choice on problem-solving approaches, introduces data structures and algorithms. Presents knowledge representation schemes for capturing biomedical domain complexity. Teaches principles of data modeling for efficient storage and retrieval. The final project involves building a medical information system that encompasses the different concepts taught in the subject.

Students complete project that covers requirements/design, data model, database implementation, web site, and system architecture. This course is an intensive review of information technology. It covers topics in software development methods, data modeling and databases, application development, Web standards and development, system integration, security, and data communications. Most of the homework sets lead the class through a project in which a database and Web application are designed and constructed, using good software process and addressing security, network and other issues. The project, which is done in two-person teams, provides hands-on experience to complement the lectures and readings. Recitations discuss readings and provide more detailed information on the software tools used. The course goal is to cover the key concepts in the major areas of information technology, to enable students to successfully understand, work with and manage IT efforts as part of supply chain, transportation or civil engineering projects.

A more formal approach to Relational Database Management Systems, compared the way they were covered during Web Applications. Database systems are discussed from the physical layer of B-trees and file servers to the abstract layer of relational design. Also includes alternative and generic approaches to database design and database management system including relational, object-relational, and object-oriented systems, SQL standards, algebraic query languages, integrity constraints, triggers, functional dependencies, and normal forms. Other topics include tuning database transactions, security from the application perspective, and data warehousing.

The students will measure the surface area and wrapper area of five pieces of candy. They will use appropriate formulas and measuring techniques to complete information needed for a spreadsheet and database. They will write a letter to the company with the most wasted paper to explain how the waste affects them as consumers and a suggestion for correcting the problem.

The 2006 E-MELD (Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Languages Data) workshop on digital language documentation is entitled 'Tools and Standards-the State of the Art.' This annual E-MELD workshop marks the culmination of the 5-year E-MELD project; thus one goal of the workshop is to review digital standards ratified by the community in prior workshops on text, lexicons, databases, and annotation.

Students, working in groups, use various resources to answer prepared questions about the candidates. Students will enter their data into a prepared database. With teacher guidance, students will learn to use the database to find information.

This module is an introduction to performing searches of the NCBI databases using Entrez, the NCBI web-based search and retrieval tool for integrated search results from multiple databases.

Students will be able to show their ability to independently create a database.

Subject assesses the relationships between sequence, structure, and function in complex biological networks as well as progress in realistic modeling of quantitative, comprehensive functional-genomics analyses. Topics include: algorithmic, statistical, database, and simulation approaches; and practical applications to biotechnology, drug discovery, and genetic engineering. Future opportunities and current limitations critically assessed. Problem sets and project emphasize creative, hands-on analyses using these concepts. There will be a special emphasis on manufacturing. Information Systems topics that will be covered include networks and distributed computing, including the World Wide Web, hardware and operating systems, software development tools and processes, relational databases, security and cryptography, enterprise applications, B2B, the semantic web and electronic commerce. Sloan LFM students with an interest in Information Systems are encouraged to register for this course.

This lesson includes information concerning database operations, word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet formatting. Students will solve math problems.
