The students will listen to stories from different cultures. They will participate in directed discussion, followed by a related art activity.

This lesson is a semester-long project that focuses on countries that speak the target language. Students will research a chosen country and do an oral presentation for the class. They will then research and present a current event weekly for the remainder of the semester.

With ever increasing cultural diversity in our schools, how do educators establish and maintain effective relationships with those whose experiences and beliefs differ from their own?

Dr. Darryle Craig, program manager for Fairfax County Public Schools College Success Program, presents her ideas and strategies for becoming "Culturally Competent.” According to Dr. Craig—cultural competency is “the ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures.”

During the program, Dr. Craig defines and examines the importance of cultural competence. Using first-hand examples and questions from the studio audience, Craig advises how to use this important skill to help close the achievement gap, and promote best practices that create success among diverse learners.

This lesson focuses on vocabulary and currency associated with food, restaurants, and menus. Students conduct research to create an authentic menu with a companion recipe books. The lesson culminates in short presentations and food samples.

The human dimensions of forced and voluntary migration are explored through the picture story book 'Ziba Came on a Boat', written by Liz Lofthouse, illustrated by Robert Ingpen, and a real-life story of Najeeba, an asylum seeker from Afghanistan. Seeking refuge — The journey, allows students to explore the human face of the journey undertaken by refugees and asylum seekers, and to create a digital story to reflect what they learn. Texts used are non-fiction, fiction, print and multimodal and include The Happiest Refugee: A memoir by Anh Do, Mahtab’s Story a novel by Libby Gleeson, the non-fiction text Children of War: Voices of Iraqi refugees by Deborah Ellis, and the graphic novel The Arrival by Shaun Tan. Words to Unite Us explores the complex theme of a common humanity and shows that despite the differences between people around the world, there are similarities that unite us, such as pain, joy and love. The unit is build using the picture storybooks 'Whoever You Are', written by Mem Fox, illustrated by Leslie Staub; 'Mirror' by Jeannie Baker and 'The Little Refugee' by Anh Do and Suzanne Do and illustrated by Bruce Whatley. The stories speaks of hope, resilience, friendship, love and enterprise.
