This scene shows Landsat Thematic Mapper data from the shortwave infrared (TM band 5), infrared (TM band 4), and visible green (TM band 2) channels of Chicago. The downtown area and Lakeshore Drive appears in the center of the downtown scene, with the Adler Planetarium in the foreground. The Chicago regional image shows the suburbs to the west and north of the city and includes O'Hare Airfield. The South Chicago image shows the southern portion of the city as well as the industrial area of Gary, Indiana. The bright red pixels are flame plumes from the steel mills along Lake Michigan's edge. North is up in the regional image, and to the right in the downtown and South Chicago-Gary images in which the camera is facing west from above Lake Michigan.

is a curriculum-oriented site concentrating on the area, south of the main business district, where blacks lived in Chicago, Illinois. The site shows photos and maps of historic buildings in the area and gives suggestions for student assignments.

presents the story of Jens Jensen, who immigrated from Denmark to the U.S. in the 1880s, took a job as a Chicago street sweeper, was promoted to gardener, and rose to renown as a landscape architect. Jensen aimed to portray the soul of the landscape and developed the Prairie style, incorporating regional trees and flowers in idealized settings of groves, streams, limestone outcroppings, and flat fields.

Starting with our camera high above the Earth, we rush in towards the surface at what would be an impossible speed for any known vehicle. Passing though layers of atmosphere, the colors of our destinations shimmer with their own unique characteristics, and suddenly we find ourselves floating in virtual space just above the ground.

Kevin Lynch's landmark volume, The Image of the City (1960), emphasized the perceptual characteristics of the urban environment, stressing the ways that individuals mentally organize their own sensory experience of cities. Increasingly, however, city imaging is supplemented and constructed by exposure to visual media, rather than by direct sense experience of urban realms. City images are not static, but subject to constant revision and manipulation by a variety of media-savvy individuals and institutions. In recent years, urban designers (and others) have used the idea of city image proactively-- seeking innovative ways to alter perceptions of urban, suburban, and regional areas. City imaging, in this sense, is the process of constructing visually-based narratives about the potential of places.

This site comprises over 55,000 images of urban life captured on glass plate negatives between 1902 and 1933 by photographers employed by the Chicago Daily News, then one of Chicago's leading newspapers. The photographs illustrate the enormous variety of topics and events covered in the newspaper, although only about twenty percent of the images in the collection were published in the newspaper. Most of the photographs were taken in Chicago, Illinois, or in nearby towns, parks, or athletic fields.
