Students create a caricature of a literary character using magazine cutouts to practice reading for details and characterization.
This project is a culminating activity for the novel, "The Family Under the Bridge" by Natalie Savage Carlson. Rather than writing the traditional book report, students will create a catalog of items, characters, places, themes, ideas, and etc. from the novel. The students will create the catalog on the computer.
Students will define the character trait self-discipline by listening to the story "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" by Kevin Henkes. They will then learn a 3R strategy: Retreat, Rethink, and React, in order to handle conflicts. This strategy can be applied to the events in this story.
This course is an introduction to ethics in business, with a focus on business management. Over the course of thirteen sessions, students explore theoretical concepts in business ethics, and cases representing the challenges they will likely face as managers. Individual sessions take the form of moderated discussion, with occasional short lectures from instructor.
Students will work in groups to evaluate the personality of various characters from "Oedipus the King". Each student will write two personal letters in the role of one character from the play responding to the events of the play and the various relationships within it.
Continued work in the development of playscripts for the theater. Writers work on sustained pieces in weekly workshop meetings, individual consultation with the instructor, and in collaboration with student actors, directors, and designers from the Dramashop and Shakespeare Ensemble. Fully developed scripts eligible for inclusion in the Playwrights' Workshop Production.
Learning to read a script theatrically with a view to mounting a coherent production. Through careful, intensive reading of a variety of plays from different periods and different aesthetics, a pattern emerges for discerning what options exist for interpretating a script. Students discuss the consequences of those options for production.
Seminar explores approaches to representation for very distributed cinematic storytelling. The relationship between story creation and story appreciation is analyzed. Readings are drawn from literary, cinematic criticism, as well as from artist's descriptions of interactive, distributed works. Students analyze a range of storytelling techniques, develop a previsualization, story construction, or audience participation model. Individual or group final projects.
After reading "Three Cool Kids", by Rebecca Emberley, students will discuss literary elements: characters, setting, problem and solution. The teacher will record using the Inspiration software what students say, making a web that shows the different elements of the story.
Introduction to the short story. Students write stories and short descriptive sketches. Readings from European and American stories from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Class discussion of students' writing and of the assigned stories in their historical and social contexts. This class will focus on the craft of the short story, which we will explore through reading great short stories, writers speaking about writing, writing exercises and conducting workshops on original stories.
