The Cape Town Open Education Declaration

Abstract:

The Cape Town Open Education Declaration arises from a small but lively meeting convened in Cape Town in September 2007. The aim of this meeting was to accelerate efforts to promote open resources, technology and teaching practices in education.

The first concrete outcome of this meeting is the Cape Town Open Education Declaration. It is at once a statement of principle, a statement of strategy and a statement of commitment. It meant to spark dialogue, to inspire action and to help the open education movement grow.

Imagining the City: Memories and cultures in Cape Town

Abstract:

The overriding strength of this book is that it places people, ordinary people at the centre of memory at the centre of historical and contemporary experience and thus at the centre of re-imagining and owning the city of Cape Town It is as they speak what they choose to say what they choose to remain silent about that we become aware of the possibilities of the city if it really did embrace all its people in all of their diversity. Cities are not only made of buildings and roads they are also constructed through popular imagination and spaces of representation Imagining the City Memories and Cultures in Cape Town presents an array of oral and visual histories drawn from people who live work and creatively express themselves in the city. This book explores the apartheid legacies of the city and demonstrates that cultural life flourished through peoples resilience in spite of adversity Authors move beyond apartheid history to analyse the reflective ways in which people are coming to terms with that history through memory work performance and memorialisation Other chapters provide contemporary views of local interactions such as moments of urban violence or people negotiating the challenges of a globalised world. Whatever the context this book traces social and cultural interactions over time and across city spaces that speak directly to the senses memories and imagining of Cape Town

Oral History and Digital Stories from Cape Town

Abstract:

People in South Africa have a dynamic but largely unrecorded heritage. The Centre for Popular Memory CPM creates spaces for these stories to be heard seen and remembered The CPM presents various oral history and memory courses for on and off campus students such as a 1st semester postgraduate course Oral History Method and Practice and Theory HST4034Z which provides skills training in oral history interviewing and interpretation an undergraduate course Memory Identity and History HST3037S explores trauma and memory across case studies of the Holocaust Apartheid and Rwanda and the representation of trauma through oral history films photographs cartoons and performances. The video clips are snippets from the following projects. Street Stories, a film documentary project tracking socio political issues and perceptions around race gender and belonging through the individual recollections of over 400 people who live or work on three arterial roads in Cape Town Bridging the Digital Divide. The program concentrates on the generational and cultural divisions between apartheid survivors and their descendants and the IT skills divide between what is perceived to be a developing country and first world technology This project seeks to build strategic partnerships that will result in strengthening scholarly dissemination.
