This activity was designed for blind learners, but all types of learners can use it to learn how the body self-regulates. This lesson plan teaches students how the human body self-regulates to maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in the external environment -- a process called homeostasis. Most of the activities detailed in this lesson plan can be done with visually impaired students if teachers adapt them using Resources for Teaching and Adapting Lessons for Students with Visual Impairments. Living Clocks

Living Clocks

In this activity about daily rhythms (on page 17 of the PDF), ... (more)

In this activity about daily rhythms (on page 17 of the PDF), learners will explore circadian patterns in humans, animals and plants. They will observe that some behaviors and functions of living organisms vary predictably every 24 hours and many regular functions are governed by internal "clocks," which run independently but are cued or reset by the environment. Groups of learners can conduct one of four (or more) body clock investigations: body temperature, animal behavior, bean leaf, and alertness/heart rate. Materials required for each group will vary, depending on the investigation(s) being conducted. This lesson guide includes background information, setup and management tips, extensions and a handout. Thermoregulation in Vertebrates Studied by Telemetry

Thermoregulation in Vertebrates Studied by Telemetry

This exercise, which is adaptable for introductory biology students or advanced physiology ... (more)

This exercise, which is adaptable for introductory biology students or advanced physiology classes, uses a simple radio telemetry system for measuring body temperature from unrestrained and undisturbed animals. The advantages of this system over traditional probe-type thermometers are enormous. The laboratory will include practice in calibration of the transmitters, instruction in inserting the transmitter into the animals, and experience in interpreting the data obtained. (less)
