This remote learning lab manual was created to guide students in 100-level physical science courses toward meeting the first outcome in the science category of the Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer Degree:

Gather, comprehend, and communicate scientific and technical information in order to explore ideas, models, and solutions and generate further questions.

The lab design goal was to adapt existing F2F labs (already aligned to AAOT science outcome #1) for a remote learning environment without abandoning the pedagogical advantages provided by combining guided inquiry methods with specialized physics education equipment, such as digital sensors and unique demonstration apparatus. Therefore, many of the labs contain embedded videos of experiments being performed and links to open-access Google spreadsheets containing the data produced by equipment during the experiments. In many cases overlay effects have been added to videos to provide additional experimental parameters, direct students' attention to important occurrences, or and assist with understanding of the experimental methods. The data in the spreadsheets has been edited to remove irrelevant data (e.g. acceleration data automatically collected by lab software before the release of a moving fan cart).

I have found that students do require roughly 1-3 instructor interactions per lab to complete them successfully. As such, the labs current state these labs might not be amenable to a totally asynchronous learning environment.

The Boxes Go Mobile

To display the results from the previous activity, each student designs and constructs a mobile that contains a duplicate of his or her original box, the new cube-shaped box of the same volume, the scraps that are left over from the original box, and pertinent calculations of the volumes and surface areas involved. They problem solve and apply their understanding of see-saws and lever systems to create balanced mobiles.

It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. "Krill oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids which numerous studies have shown to be effective in reducing intestinal inflammation like that associated with inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. But exactly how krill oil helps has remained unclear. Now, researchers have discovered a few mechanisms that might explain krill oil’s anti-inflammatory effects. Test-tube experiments showed that krill oil suppressed the NF-κB and NOD signaling pathways, which are critical to the innate immune response. Krill oil also enhanced the killing capacity of macrophages, bacteria-fighting cells that help reduce inflammation. In pigs, krill oil reduced the abundance of Rickettsiales, pathogenic bacteria found in humans and livestock. Computational analyses also revealed distinct microbial signatures associated with adding krill oil to the diet..."
