These are a set of fictional case studies that are designed to prompt reflection and discussion about issues at the intersection of AI and Ethics. These case studies were developed out of an interdisciplinary workshop series at Princeton University that began in 2017-18. They are the product of a research collaboration between the University Center for Human Values (UCHV) and the Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) at Princeton. "Recent years have seen the rapid global emergence of the "gig economy". Today’s technology has made it easier than ever to take on platform-enabled jobs on the side or even full-time, whether that’s renting out your home, delivering food, or giving others a lift. But that, researchers from Ireland say, could be problematic. In a new article published in the Human Resource Management Journal, they discuss “gig work” as another chapter in an all-too-familiar story: how technology has outpaced our capacity to fully consider its effects on humans. As the gig economy continues to grow, gig workers themselves could be growing more distant from the platforms that provide at least some portion of their livelihood. While the work may offer the flexibility many seek, there’s clear cause for concern over the well-being of workers, signaling an urgent need for dedicated research. Part of the problem lies in how gig work is discussed..."

This course is an examination of philosophical theories of action and motivation in the light of empirical findings from social psychology, sociology, and neuroscience. Topics include belief, desire, and moral motivation; sympathy and empathy; intentions and other committing states; strength of will and weakness of will; free will; addiction and compulsion; guilt, shame and regret; evil; self-knowledge and self-deception; and, virtues and character traits.

Satellite Engineering introduces students to subsystem design in engineering spacecraft. The course presents characteristic subsystems, such as power, structure, communication and control, and analyzes the engineering trades necessary to integrate subsystems successfully into a satellite. Discussions of spacecraft operating environment and orbital mechanics help students to understand the functional requirements and key design parameters for satellite systems.

Coursework examines important issues facing the youth of today and discusses sexual assault, sexual violence, sex trafficking, and the importance of advocating for self and for others. The coursework is inclusive to all genders/races/ethnicities/abilities and makes the point that sexual violence does not discriminate. This is meant to be an open, discussion-based seminar to ask important questions and learn about safety for yourself and others from sexual violence. Learn about your resources and your rights as an individual to help serve yourself and your community. Students will complete a community project that contributes to student volunteer hours. This is meant to help them immerse into the content they learn within the scope of this course, as well as foster empathy and civic engagement within students to become passionate and upstanding individuals for their communities.
