Wang notes that many members of the Legal Defense Fund are skeptical of President George Bush's commitment to civil rights; she adds that civil rights advocates are worried about Bush making conservative appointments to the judiciary. Wang interviews Young about Bush's presidency and his possible judicial appointments. Young says that Bush did not exhibit fairness and decency during the presidential campaign. Wang interviews Tom Franklin and Rona Kiley of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Franklin and Kiley say that Bush is beholden to the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Wang reports that there will be several openings in lower courts and a possible opening on the Supreme Court during Bush's term in office. Johnson discusses her relative, Eleanor Graves Chandler, who was an early community activist. Wetherbee's report is accompanied by footage of Johnson preparing chicken in her kitchen and by footage of Johnson visiting a senior citizen meal program at the Grace Baptist Church.

Barbour says that Baldwin's voice was truthful and angry. He adds that Baldwin's work bears witness to the African American experience in the twentieth century. Crossley's report includes footage of Baldwin talking about race in the United States. Crossley reports that Baldwin dealt with religious themes in his later work. Crossley's report is accompanied by shots of Baldwin's books and by footage from the American Playhouse production of Go Tell it on the Mountain. Mel King (candidate for Mayor of Boston) and Jesse Jackson (African American political leader) arrive at the church to address a Rainbow Coalition press conference. King introduces Jackson as 'country preacher.' Jackson talks about the civil rights movement, and reviews 20 years of progress toward freedom in the US. Jackson commends King for his record and endorses him for mayor of Boston. Jackson says that voting irregularities are still a problem in the US; that the Voting Rights Act must be vigorously enforced. King presents Jackson with a copy of his book, Chain of Change. In response to audience questions, Jackson states that his goals are to achieve parity and to fight Ronald Reagan (US President). Jackson talks about the Democratic Party and says that he is considering a run for the presidency. Carmen Fields reports that the play Les Blancs, by playwright Lorraine Hansberry will be produced by the Huntington Theater Company. Fields reports that Les Blancs is set in a fictitious African nation struggling for independence. Fields reports that Robert Nemiroff (production advisor) is overseeing the production of the play. Fields interviews Nemiroff about Hansberry and her work. Nemiroff says that Hansberry's play foreshadows the revolutionary changes that would take place in Africa in the 1960s. Nemiroff discusses Hansberry's work; he says that much of her work revolved around the relationship between the oppressed and their oppressors. Fields reviews Hansberry's career. Callie Crossley reports on three local recipients of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowships. Crossley notes that David Mumford (mathematician), Muriel Snowden (community organizer) and Eric Lander (MIT) are three of the thirty-two national winners of the Fellowships. Crossley interviews Mumford about his work in mathematics. Crossley reports that Snowden founded the Freedom House in Roxbury with her husband Otto in 1949. She adds that Snowden has worked to eradicate racial bias and to create opportunities for minority youth. Crossley interviews Snowden about her community work and her future plans. Crossley's interview includes photos of Snowden and footage of Snowden with colleagues. Crossley reports that Lander is a mathematician who is working to map the genetic patterns of certain hereditary diseases. Crosssley interviews Lander about his work. George interviews Mississippi delegates Jesse Banks, Ed Cole, Isaiah Frederides, Sherry Fisher, Deborah Dunn and Joe Gaitlin. Each delegate expresses pride in the political process and talks about the changes in the state of Mississippi. George reviews the struggle by African Americans for inclusion in the Democratic Party. George discusses the history of African Americans at the Democratic National Convention from 1948 to 1968. A Say Brother Special Film Presentation, program 312 is a public television airing of Ely Landau's 1970 documentary film 'Montgomery to Memphis.' The film, which is about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights movement, was originally issued by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation and produced by Ely Landau with Richard Kaplan. It consists of archival newsreel and television footage assembled in chronological order. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1970 for Best Documentary Film. In black and white. Christy George reports on efforts by the National Conference of Black Lawyers and women's groups to fight the nomination of Robert Bork (judge) to the Supreme Court. George reports that Bork believes in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, while African Americans and women's groups believe that the Constitution needs to be interpreted according to the changes in society since the 18th century. George's report includes footage from a meeting of the National Conference of Black Lawyers in Cambridge. Julie Walker (professor, University of Illinois at Urbana) and Adjoa Aiyetoro (Co-chair, National Conference of Black Lawyers) address the meeting. George interviews Gerald Horne (attorney and professor at Sarah Lawrence College), Margaret Burnham (attorney and retired judge), and Barbara Arnwine (Director, Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights) about their opposition to Bork. George notes that Bork's critics do not dispute his legal skills. George's report includes footage from an anti-Bork demonstration by women's groups on City Hall Plaza. Christy George interviews Dorchester residents about the William Atkinson murder case. Reverend David Venator (United Church of Christ) says that the state could have filed more charges against the defendants; that violations of the civil rights of minorities have become commonplace. Venator says that the Dorchester community needs to deal with the racial prejudice which provoked the death of William Atkinson (Boston resident). Christy George (WGBH reporter) comments that Venator has condemned racial prejudice more severely than Francine Atkinson (William Atkinson's sister). Venator says that he can condemn racial prejudice because he is white; that he does not condone any kind of violence. Venator says that the Atkinson case is an example of a civil rights violation; that he has never experienced racial violence to that degree as a white man. A white male Dorchester resident says that Atkinson's death was not an isolated incident. The man notes that the Dorchester community has reacted strongly and quickly against Atkinson's death. The man says that the Dorchester community intends to see justice done in this case. George asks a white female Dorchester resident if she thinks that the media attention given to the Atkinson case helped bring about a more thorough investigation and the filing of stronger charges. The woman says that the media coverage is a result of the strong reaction against Atkinson's death by members of the Dorchester community. George comments that many white Dorchester residents are supporting the cause of William Atkinson. The woman says that Dorchester residents of all races are working together to fight racial violence and to make Dorchester a safer community. The tape includes footage of court proceedings in Suffolk Superior Court. George Hurd (Judge, Suffolk Superior Court) presides over the courtroom. The lawyers for the defendants identify themselves. The five defendants each plead not guilty to the charges against them. The charges are read out loud. John Kiernan (Assistant District Attorney) makes bail recommendations for the five defendants.
