An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate acute angles (those less than 90 deg). The applet presents an angle (initially acute) that the user can adjust by dragging the end points of the line segments forming the angle. As it changes it shows the angle measure and a message that indicate which type of angle it is. There a software 'detents' that make it easy capture exact angles such as 90 degrees and 180 degrees The message and angle measures can be turned off to facilitate classroom discussion. The text on the page has links to other pages defining each angle type in depth. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. The applet shows a triangle that is initially acute (all angles less then 90 degrees) which the user can reshape by dragging any vertex. There is a message changes in real time while the triangle is being dragged that tells if the triangle is an acute, right or obtuse triangle and gives the reason why. By experimenting with the triangle student can develop an intuitive sense of the difference between these three classes of triangle. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Geometry Tools: Angles & Reflections

Students learn about common geometry tools and then learn to use protractors (and Miras, if available) to create and measure angles and reflections. The lesson begins with a recap of the history and modern-day use of protractors, compasses and mirrors. After seeing some class practice problems and completing a set of worksheet-prompted problems, students share their methods and work. Through the lesson, students gain an awareness of the pervasive use of angles, and these tools, for design purposes related to engineering and everyday uses. This lesson prepares students to conduct the associated activity in which they “solve the holes” for hole-in-one multiple-banked angle solutions, make their own one-hole mini-golf courses with their own geometry-based problems and solutions, and then compare their “on paper” solutions to real-world results.

The lesson starts with a review of basic geometric terms.Angles are defined.There are four types of angles.A right angle measures 90° and forms a square corner. If you were to sit inside a right angle, you would be sitting straight up.An acute angle measures less than 90° and is open less than a right angle. Acute angles have a smaller measurement. Think of them as small and cute. =) If you were sitting inside an acute angle, you would be bent together like a 'V'.An obtuse angle measures more than 90° and is open more than a right angle. Obtuse angles have a larger measurement. If you were to sit inside a obtuse angle, you would be leaning back as if you were lounging in a beach chair by the pool.A straight angle measures exactly 180° and forms a straight line. If you were to sit inside a straight angle, you would actually have to lay down flat on your back.

Drinking water comes from many different sources, including surface water and groundwater. Environmental engineers analyze the physical properties of groundwater to predict how and where surface contaminants will travel. In this lesson, students will learn about several possible scenarios of contamination to drinking water. They will analyze the movement of example contaminants through groundwater such as environmental engineers must do (i.e., engineers identify and analyze existing contamination of water sources in order to produce high quality drinking water for consumers).
