This course introduces managers and other professionals working in the nonprofit sector to Value Based Management. Development of the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics and their simplifications for several areas of marine hydrodynamics. Application of these principles to the solution of ocean engineering problems. Topics include the principles of conservation of mass, momentum and energy; hydrostatic behavior of floating and submerged bodies; lift and drag forces; dimensional analysis; wave forces on ships and offshore platforms; laminar and turbulent flows. Experimental projects conducted in ocean engineering laboratories illustrating concepts taught in class, including ship resistance and model testing, lift and drag forces on submerged bodies, and vehicle propulsion.
Another open trend that is growing quickly is the adoption of open source textbooks. But, the more broadly named movement has come to be known as open educational resources (OER). OER focus not only on textbooks, but also on full courses, course materials, modules, journals, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques that are critical in the learning environment.
UCB secures a grant to continue development of open-source software that would let colleges around the world easily post lectures from their most popular professors. The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that, "'Opencast Matterhorn' – received $1.5-million in grants from the Andrew W. Mellon and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations to begin developing software. The first version is scheduled to be released in July 2010, featuring a scheduling tool, software for uploading and encoding video and audio for distribution on iTunes and YouTube, an RSS generator, and a media player."
