Peter Merrington, novelist and Professor Extraordinaire in the Department of English University of the Western Cape, was guest speaker at UCT's Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) Great TextsBig Question lecture in September 2010. His illustrated lecture "First Light False Dawn" explores the making of a public cultural identity for a new nation and responds to the first hundred years (1910-2010) of South Africa as a unitary nation state. Merrington explores the meaning of heritage in the late nineteenth century in relation to then popular concepts of vernacular identity in England. He shows how ideas of Englishness influenced the quest for a new South African cultural vernacular and how the young ideologues drew on these ideas for their vision.

On Thursday 15 October the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts GIPCA Great Texts Big Questions lecturer is Angelo Gobbato, one of South Africa's leading authorities on opera who will discuss Beethoven's Fidelio and selected Cape Town performances. Angelo Gobbato is widely acknowledged as having helped opera to flourish in South Africa and garner international interest and recognition. Having begun his operatic career as a bass Gobbato, he went on to become a highly successful opera director taking South African productions to appreciative audiences around the world. As Director of the UCT Opera School from 1982 to 2008 he spearheaded the transformation of opera turning CAPAB Opera Department into Cape Town Opera, the first independent professional opera company in Southern Africa. His programmes have broken boundaries bringing opera to the new audiences and fostering exceptional operatic talent. Gobbato has received many awards: a Merit Award from the department of Arts Culture and Heritage of the Western Cape in recognition of his outstanding achievement in and contribution to the performing Arts, the title Cavaliere nellordine al merito della Repubblica Italiana by the Italian Government, the Western Cape Premierrsquos Award for Special Contribution to the Cultural life of the Western Cape, the Khula Award for music, and an Honorary Doctorate from UCT for his contribution to the transformation of the vocal arts in South Africa. Upon his retirement UCT granted him the title of Emeritus Professor. Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, reflects a struggle for political liberty and has relevance to the political history of South Africa. Gobbato's modernday production of Fidelio was set in Robben Island and tells the story of how Leonore disguised as a prison guard named Fidelio rescues her husband Florestan from death in the political prison This production introduced opera to South Africans that had never before been exposed to the art form.

There are few contexts where people are not confronted by difference in the workplace, in organisations and public spaces, and as an aspect of the general body politic. The challenge, therefore, is how to value what different groups may bring to the collective while, at the same time, maintaining cohesive societies. Contemporary South Africa is no exception in facing realities such as these although the specific contours that the challenges take are obviously shaped by South Africa's history, its socioeconomic capacities, and the particular demographics that form its population. Widespread legislative reform has attempted to redress stratification along a number of axes of difference. Employment equity measures such as affirmative action which were conceptualised in countries like the USA were designed to introduce a representative number from minority groups into relatively homogenous organisations. The changes envisioned for South African organisations are of a different order in this country where the majority demographic has to be brought into the centre politically, economically, and organisationally - a fundamental transformation in processes, structures, identities and relationships. The case studies that are presented here are a reminder of this sometimes volatile transformation of South African life where new opportunities and challenges often come into conflict with old mindsets and practices.

In the past Prof Tim Noakes was convinced that physiology could explain performance. After 38 years of studying the human body, he now believes that the mind and the role of self belief are crucial factors in human athletic feats. In January 2008, Noakes presented this lecture, entitled "Beyond the VO2 Max: The Role of Self Belief in Elite Athletic Performance" at Croke Park Stadium, Dublin.

This guideline was produced for those persons responsible for the maintenance of health and safety measures at agricultural workplaces handling potentially hazardous organophosphate and carbarnate chemicals. It is primarily aimed at professional nursing and other medical staff charged with monitoring workers for pesticide exposure, but will be useful to all personnel involved in workplace health and safety monitoring for pesticide exposure. The guidelines concentrate on monitoring for organophosphate and carabarnate insecticides because the technology is reasonably readily available and the methodology well described. These chemicals are widely used and are the most common cause of acute poisoning by pesticides. The guidelines have also been written bearing in mind the Hazardous Chemical Regulation 556 of 25 August 1995, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that includes agricultural workplaces, in addition to industry.

This presentation was delivered November 18 2009 at the Teaching with Technology Miniconference hosted by the Centre for Educational Technology at UCT. Higher education institutions in the 21st century find themselves in a complex and often contradictory environment as many of the world's leading institutions are formulating policy to give their content away for free and are investing significant resources in establishing open content platforms while other smaller institutions are holding onto content and proprietary systems in order to protect their identity and intellectual capital. The open educational resources OER movement follows in the wake of open source software and open access publishing initiatives and is fast transforming the way in which teaching and learning materials are created, shared and appropriated. Drawing on the concept of the Knowledge Commons and the principle of sharing knowledge for greater good, the OER movement has the potential to play a substantial role in disrupting the traditional flow of information and transforming how institutions view their pedagogical practices. The OER UCT project hosted by the Centre for Educational Technology at the University of Cape Town and funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation aims to showcase the teaching efforts of UCT academics by encouraging the publication of resources as OER. The project is also in the process of building a directory listing the UCT Collection of OER which will go live from early 2010 offering unprecedented potential for the sharing and visibility of teaching materials and global institutional and individual profiling on international OER sites. In this presentation Michael Paskevicius and Michelle Willmers will introduce the new terrain of OER and showcase the teaching and learning materials created by UCT academics that are already available worldwide and how UCT is gearing up to help you do the same

On Thursday 29 October the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) Great Texts Big Questions guest speaker is Carrol Clarkson, an Associate Professor in English Department at the University of Cape Town. She will be discussing the work of Nobel Prize winning novelist JM Coetzee .GIPCA Great Texts Big Questions popular lecture series provides an opportunity to hear a leading intellectual discuss one of life's big questions or a significant book or artwork. The great texts under discussion in Clarks' lecture are "Waiting for the Barbarians" and "Disgrace." The publication of "Waiting for the Barbarians" confirmed Coetzee's standing as a novelist of international repute. "Disgrace" is Coetzee's most widely discussed and his most controversial work, not least because of the novel's winning of the Booker Prize in 1999, the charges of racism lodged against the novel at the Human Rights Commission, and the recent release of the film "Disgrace" starring John Malkovich. Clarkson's research interests lie in the philosophy of language and in post apartheid South African literature and art Her most recent publication is her book on Coetzee entitled JM Coetzee Countervoices. In her GIPCA lecture she will be asking a big question about the limits of literary representation with specific reference to "Waiting for the Barbarians" and "Disgrace."

The transition to democracy in South Africa brought real improvements in the opportunities open to many children and young people. Some constraints and pressures of the Apartheid Era have been mitigated or removed. In some respects, however, the lives of children and young people have not changed and, in some respects, they may have worsened. The extension of political rights to all adults has not meant an end to poverty among children and adolescents, personal security has declined, and AIDS has wreaked havoc. In this course scholars working on and with children and adolescents consider some of the major dimensions of the lives of young people in South Africa, examining the ways in which they have and have not changed and the roles that children and adolescents themselves play in shaping their lives.

For South Africa, finding a policy approach that balances the increasing demand for energy with the need for sustainability, equity, and climate change mitigation is a particular challenge. Through energy modelling indicators of sustainable development and policy analysis, Harald Winkler builds a rich and detailed case study illustrating how a development-focused approach to energy and climate policy might work in South Africa. Moreover, with recent recordsetting global crude oil prices, he points out that making energy supply and use more sustainable is a central challenge in South Africa's future development path. An energy researcher, IPCC author, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and a member of the South African delegation to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Winkler offers a nuanced examination of where the synergies and tradeoffs lie, and makes clear the imperative of considering long-term implications when meeting short-term needs.

The draft review examines the link between climate change and health with special reference to the Southern African region SADC countries It attempts to set the scene for determining pertinent research priorities in the region to contribute to knowledge on the one hand and for identification implementation and evaluation of adaptation interventions that are likely to be appropriate and effective in the region This review has been conducted by Strategic Evaluation Advisory and Development Consulting SEAD a health consultancy together with the COEHR and is part of the Regional Climate Change Programme RCPP led by One World Sustainable Investments

Shown here are a single set of techniques which are both simple to employ and reliable for four examinations. General Examination: preparing the patient for examination; describing the patient's appearance; examination for features of specific illnesses; taking the pulse; assessing warmth, perfusion, hydration and temperature; inspecting the hands, eyes, mouth and pharynx; looking for lymphadenopathy; and inspecting the legs. Abdominal Examination: preparing the patient for the examination; looking for some signs of abdominal disease on a focused general examination; inspecting the abdomen; light palpation for areas of tenderness; detecting peritonism; determining the position and size of the liver by percussion and palpation; determining the position and size of the spleen by percussion and palpation; confirming the presence of ascite;s other features of portal hypertension; examining the iliac fossae and suprapubic region; detecting enlarged kidneys; identifying other abdominal masses ;and listening for bowel sounds. Respiratory examination: preparing the patient for the examination; looking for some signs of respiratory disease on a focused general examination; looking at the pattern of breathing; assessing the degree of expansion of the chest and its symmetry by inspection and by palpation; assessing the position of the trachea; percussing the chest for dullness and resonance; listening to the breath sounds by auscultation. Cardio vascular examination: getting your patient into the right position; general assessment; assessing the pulse; measuring blood pressure; measuring jugular venous pressure; palpation of the praecordium; palpation of the apex; auscultation of the heart; and signs of heart failure.

Diversity and Equity Interventions in South Africa (DEISA) was a research programme that studied the transformation industry in South Africa, exploring issues such as the kinds of interventions being undertaken under the rubric of diversity and equity, how these are experienced by people working in organisations, the theoretical frameworks used by practitioner,s and especially how they may or may not articulate with the quest for social justice in a democratising South Africa. The project examined 1) a questionnaire submitted to diversity practitioners across South Africa and 2) diversity interventions conducted at 12 South African organisations. These organisations included government institutions and private sector companies and ranged from multinationals to small family-owned concerns. They were situated mostly in the two major hubs of the South African economy, Gauteng and Cape Town. Two studies were in other regions of the country, Mpumalanga and North West Province.

One of South Africa's most prominent sociologists, Professor Deborah Posel, gave this Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) Great TextsBig Questions lecture, discussing "Conspicuous Consumption, Conspicuous Waste". Thorsten Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class' conspicuous consumption of keeping up with the Joneses' describes the purchase of goods to show status or display wealt. Once more apparent within the nouveau riche or upper-income groups, recent research has indicated how conspicuous consumption is common in emerging economies where people buy to combat the impression that they are poor. Posel's lecture looks at the life and writings of the man who coined the phrase 'conspicuous consumption' and the controversies he provoked as an intellectual and social maverick. Writing in the late nineteenth century, Veblen was an economist whose version of economics was unrecognizable to many of his peers, not least because he produced an account of the origins of conspicuous consumption lodged in the intersections of human instinct, culture gender and war. Deborah Posel is the founding Director of UCT's Institute for Humanities in Africa.
