This module is intended to introduce students to one of the greatest social problems to face this planet, the global epidemic of HIV/AIDS and to increase their computer and research skills within sociology.

The proposed exercises are to be used in my Sociology of Family and my Society and Power courses. The exercise would seem to work best with readings or discussions of gender, family structure, social stratification and life chances. The activity begins with a modified version of an SSDAN exercise created created by Elizabeth Jordan, "The Explosion of Teenage Motherhood: Myth or Reality?" The concluding activity, exercise 2, is designed to give students an introduction to generating and testing a formal hypothesis.

The American Indian population in the U.S., S.D., and many other states has shown significant growth in recent decades. It is also a comparatively young population. In this module, you will look at these growth patterns, compare the size and age distribution of the American Indian population in the U.S., S.D., & several reservation counties (& your home state/county if you choose).

While a much larger percentage of American families are located in the top income bracket in 1990 compared to fifty years ago, there were still slightly over 1/4 of American families with income of $25K or less in 1990.

This exercise asses students' knowledge about attitudes towards premarital sex.

Students will practice interpreting bivariate tables by examining the relationship between credit hours and study hours, gender and video games, and type of school and language offerings.

For this assignment, students will pretend to be a social researcher hired by the developers of Luxury Lane, a high end shopping plaza featuring gourmet cuisine, custom furniture, designer clothing, and expensive artwork. They will determine (1) if they should consider placing their shopping area in Ohio or another state, and (2) if they choose Ohio, whether they should choose Cleveland or another city.

In the first part of this exercise, students will use the elaboration model to analyze the census data from the SSDAN website. To carry out this study, whey will follow the basic procedures in social research and apply the concepts and techniques that have been discussed in class.

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with interpreting charts and graphs by using a credible source, the US Census.

This module teaches students to think about household and family dynamics over time, and to use computer software to access and analyze census data and to produce and interpret simple statistics.

This module is designed to illustrate the effects of selection bias on the observed relationship between premarital cohabitation and later divorce. It also serves as a review of key methodological concepts introduced in the first part of the course.

Students will act as the administrator of an agency dealing with meeting the needs of diverse groups in a two county area. They will use census data to obtain information for the purpose of community resource planning.

There is no question that life in America has changed drastically in the past fifty years. Given the importance of examining historical change inherent in the life course perspective, it is important to determine how changes in the social structure over time impact individuals. Therefore, the goals of this data analysis exercise are to examine changes in marriage and employment over the last fifty years. The purposes are to identify the changes that have taken place, and to hypothesize how these changes may affect the process of desistance from crime today.

We've argued that societal stratification is "both a condition and a process" (Kerckhoff, 2000). The former captures what the distribution of valued resources (e.g., money, education) among other things look like in a society. The question, most simply, is 'who gets what'?

The purpose of this assignment is to apply what you have learned in this course regarding the consequences of marginalization to an analysis of actual Census data for the United States in the year 2000. For this assignment, we will explore the impact of racial affiliation and sex on social class, as represented by socio-economic status (SES): level of education, occupation and income.

Students will use data from the General Social Survey to explore factors which affect attitudes towards the death penalty.

For this assignment, we will explore differences by gender, race/ethnicity, and age group in social class status and poverty rates among the older population (age 65 or older).

This module examines the disability community and inequality. Students will attempt to determine which is the best indicator of disability and will form a composite to describe the disability community.
